It's nearly term-time again. 🎒

For neurodivergent children, that shift can feel bigger than it looks from the outside.
New routines, sensory overload and changes to settings over the holidays. Loss of the freedom experienced during holidays can also be difficult to process.

We have some useful suggestions for the run-up to term:
- Start bedtime/morning routines early
- Practice uniform and new sensory elements in advance
- Talk about what's changing, what's staying the same and things to look forward to (favourite subjects, after school clubs, seeing friends).
- Visit the school or classroom beforehand if you can - even just driving past can help.
- Expect a wobble. After-school dysregulation is really common - build in chill-out time where there can be low expectation and low demand for the first few weeks.

There's no "getting it right", it's just about finding what helps your child feel a little more prepared for their return to school.

Do you need extra support during the transition? We offer a variety of services for families across Tonbridge, Sevenoaks & Tunbridge Wells. Visit our website to find out more or email our team to see how we can help.

ADHD IS NOT A MYTH

There has been a lot of discussion recently questioning whether ADHD is “real”. But the scientific evidence is clear: ADHD is a recognised and extensively researched neurodevelopmental condition.

Healthy debate about diagnosis and treatment is important — but dismissing ADHD as a myth can increase stigma for children and adults who already struggle to have their experiences understood.

For anyone wanting to understand the evidence in more depth, we highly recommend watching “ADHD Is Not a Myth – What the Science Really Says”, which explores the science and evidence surrounding ADHD.

Evidence matters. Understanding matters!

Can we talk about something rarely mentioned in the run-up to school holidays?

For many children - particularly neurodivergent children - the end of term isn't a relief. The end of term means a loss of the predictable structure that keeps them regulated. That's not to say you always need a strict timetable, but it does mean that making it up as you go often isn't the easiest option.

A few small things that can help:
🔸 Keep a visual calendar of the holidays; something they can look at regularly.
🔸 Tell them the day's plan the night before.
🔸 Keep mealtimes consistent, even if everything else shifts.
🔸 Build in decompression time after anything social.
🔸 Let them choose one activity a day or a 'special' outing, so they have some control.

Be gentle on yourselves too — it's not always easy, especially when the routines of term time disappear overnight.

If the holidays are feeling like a lot this year, our team offer support for children and families across Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, and Tunbridge Wells — including during school holidays, when things can often feel harder rather than easier. Email us or visit foundationschildtherapy.co.uk to find out more.

The school holidays aren’t a break for every child. 🧠

For many children - particularly neurodivergent children — losing term-time structure can mean losing regulation too.

You don’t need a strict timetable. But “making it up as we go” often isn’t the easiest option.

Small things that help:
🗓️ Tell them the plan the night before
🍽️ Keep mealtimes consistent
🌿 Build in decompression after anything social
🎯 Let them choose one activity a day
Be gentle on yourselves too. 💛

The summer holidays are just around the corner. 😎☀️

They may be full of freedom, but they can also be a big change in routine for a lot of families.
For some children that shift can bring extra anxiety alongside the excitement.

Our Children's yoga is designed to help. 🧘‍♂️
Starting on 22nd July, 4 sessions in a consistent space where they can regulate, connect, and just be themselves. With calm and grounding in mind, made for a period they might find unsettling.

If you're thinking ahead to how the holidays might feel for your child, we'd love to help you plan for it. Our team is here for a chat.💬

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can affect both young people and adults after experiencing or witnessing a distressing event. Recognising the signs early can make a real difference in getting the right support for your family.

In children and young people, look out for:

🔹 Re-enacting trauma through play or drawing.
🔹 Nightmares or sleep disturbances.
🔹 Increased clinginess or separation anxiety.
🔹 Irritability, angry outbursts, or difficulty concentrating.
🔹 Avoidance of people, places, or things linked to the trauma.
🔹 Regression to younger behaviours (e.g. bedwetting, thumb-sucking).
🔹 Physical symptoms like headaches or stomach aches with no clear cause.

In adults, signs can include:

🔹 Intrusive memories, flashbacks, or distressing dreams.
🔹 Avoidance of reminders of the trauma.
🔹 Persistent low mood, guilt, or negative beliefs about oneself or the world.
🔹 Hypervigilance or feeling constantly "on edge".
🔹 Difficulty sleeping or concentrating.
🔹 Emotional numbness or feeling detached from others.

At Foundations, we offer trauma informed counselling services to support both children and adults through their healing journey.

If you or someone you know is experiencing these signs, please know support is available and reaching out is a sign of strength, not weakness.
