"Can they go to school with it?"

It's a question parents ask healthcare professionals all the time, especially once September arrives.

And the answer isn't always what people expect.

🤢 Vomiting or diarrhoea?
Keep them off until they've been free from either for at least 48 hours.

🌡️ High temperature?
Keep them home until the temperature has gone and they're well enough to attend.

🪮 Head lice?
They can still go to school. Just start treatment as soon as you find them.

🖐️ Hand, foot and mouth?
If they're otherwise well enough, they usually don't need to stay off until every blister has disappeared.

🦠 Impetigo?
They'll need to stay off until the sores have crusted and healed, or for 48 hours after starting antibiotic treatment.

Of course, there is another question that's just as important:

Are they actually well enough to be there?

Guidelines are useful, but so is looking at the child in front of you.

If they're exhausted, miserable, not drinking as well as usual or clearly not themselves, they may need a day at home - and if you're concerned about how much they're drinking, seek medical advice. School uniform: sorted.

Shoes: hopefully still fit.

PE kit: found eventually.

But what about the medicine cupboard?

Before September properly kicks off, there are a few basics I recommend parents check they have at home:

🌡️ A working digital thermometer

💊 Age-appropriate paracetamol or ibuprofen, if your child can take them

🩹 Plasters and basic dressings

👃 Saline nasal spray or drops for blocked noses

🪮 A nit comb, one of those things you hope you don't need, but definitely don't want to be looking for at 8pm!

And if your child takes regular medication, now is a good time to check expiry dates, make sure you've got enough and check that school has whatever they need too.

You don't need a cupboard overflowing with medicines. A few sensible basics will get you through most of those minor illnesses and injuries that inevitably appear once September arrives.

And when something doesn't feel quite so minor, that's where we can help.

Hopefully everything on this list stays firmly in the cupboard.

💍 PrymaCare is closed today as Mrs PrymaCare and I are celebrating our 12th wedding anniversary. ❤️

So, in honour of 12 years of marriage, here is some essential medical advice for anyone who suddenly realises they’ve forgotten theirs:

🩺 Acute Anniversary Amnesia – Immediate Management

Symptoms may include:
• Sudden onset sweating
• Racing heart
• A feeling of impending doom
• Frantically checking the calendar
• Googling “same-day flower delivery”
• Repeatedly asking yourself, “Was it definitely today?”

Recommended treatment:

1. Remain calm.
2. Do NOT attempt to convince them that “we weren’t doing presents this year.”
3. Flowers may provide temporary symptomatic relief.
4. A restaurant booking can improve prognosis.
5. Avoid phrases such as “I’ve just been really busy.”
6. If symptoms persist, jewellery may be indicated.
7. Prevention remains better than cure - put it in your calendar.

Thankfully, I remembered this one. 😂

So PrymaCare is taking a rare day off while we celebrate, but normal service resumes tomorrow - marriage intact and anniversary successfully managed. ❤️

We offer industry-leading pay rates, travel time, comprehensive and refresher training and a clear pathway to progress your career. In addition, we will make sure that you are trained to deliver any care needed and will introduce you to any new client ahead of time.

- Rates start at £14.50 per hour for training
- Training and refresher courses are paid for
- DBS check is paid by Visiting Angels
- You will receive a regular contract (so no zero contracts) at the end of
your probationary period. Unless you want to.)
- Travel time and mileage are paid
- In addition to the usual holidays, you will have your birthday off (if you want to)

If you've been out walking in Kent recently, it's worth checking for ticks.
It's something I hardly ever came across when I worked in London.

Now, working in West Kent, I see tick bites all the time.

The thing I notice most?

People are understandably worried they've immediately got Lyme disease.

The reality is that, for most people, that's NOT the case.

The important thing is to remove the tick properly, keep an eye on the area over the following days and weeks, and know what to look out for.

Seek medical advice if you develop an expanding circular or oval rash, or flu-like symptoms after a tick bite.

The good news is that most tick bites don't lead to Lyme disease, but it's still worth knowing the signs so you can act if you need to.

Especially at this time of year, after a walk in the woods, long grass or the countryside, a quick tick check is never a bad idea.
