Whether you are returning to running, getting back in the garden, or just walking more, your spine takes on new load in spring.

Your spine was designed to move. The nervous system functions best when movement is varied and regular. The two work as a team.

People in our practice who come in consistently mention that they bounce back from physical activity more comfortably and feel more confident moving. We think this reflects what happens when the nervous system is clear and the spine is doing its job.

Movement is brilliant for you. A clear nervous system helps you get more from it.

This one still surprises people when we share it.

Research from neuroscientist and chiropractor Dr Heidi Haavik found that the brain allocates significantly more processing resource to restricted spinal joints than to those moving freely.

Think of it like a slow app running in the background. You might not notice it directly. But it is using processing power that your brain could otherwise spend on clarity, coordination, and recovery.

When the restriction is corrected, that resource is freed up. People in our practice mention this often, without being prompted. Clearer head. Better focus. Things that are harder to explain but very easy to notice.

A lot of people arrive at their first visit not quite knowing what to expect.

So here is what we are actually doing when we assess your spine.

We are looking at which joints are moving freely and which are not. We are checking how well the nervous system is communicating through the spine. And we are looking at the patterns your history has created, because the problem is rarely where the pain is.

We take time on the first visit. We want to understand what is going on before we do anything. If you have questions, bring them. That is what the assessment is for.

It is not just you. We hear this every spring.

People start moving more. Getting back outside. Returning to things they dropped over winter. And suddenly the body has opinions about it.

The spine and nervous system have spent months adapting to lower activity, less daylight, more time sitting. When demand increases quickly, areas of tension or restriction that were managing just fine can become a lot more noticeable.

It is worth getting checked before you push through it. The body is not broken. It is just catching up.

If you have been thinking about coming in, spring is a good time to start.

Your nervous system does not switch off when you leave the practice.

Research into chiropractic and the nervous system suggests that in the hours following an adjustment, the brain begins reorganising how it processes information from the spine.

People in our practice often mention sleeping more deeply the night after a visit. Feeling less tense across the shoulders. Noticing things they had stopped noticing were there.

We find this fascinating. The adjustment itself takes seconds. What follows takes longer.

Right now, without you doing a single thing, your body is:

Regulating your blood pressure.
Coordinating millions of nerve signals per second.
Keeping your body temperature controlled.
Repairing micro-tears in your muscles.
Maintaining your posture and balance without a single conscious thought.
Digesting your last meal.
Growing new cells.

All of it. Simultaneously. Without your conscious involvement.

Your body is extraordinarily intelligent. It doesn't need to be told how to do any of this. It already knows.

This is called "innate intelligence". It's physiology. The brain and nervous system coordinate every single one of these functions, every second of every day.

But here's the catch: that intelligence depends on clear, uninterrupted communication through your spinal cord and nerves. When the spine is under stress, those signals can be disrupted, and the body's ability to self-regulate and adapt may be compromised.

Chiropractic doesn't heal you. It removes the interference so your body can do what it already knows how to do.

That's the whole thing. That's the whole job.

None of it happens without you.

Whether you've been here from the very beginning, or you walked through the door last week, you are the reason ORA CHIROPRACTIC exists.

This community, this practice on Dunraven Street, is built entirely on the trust you place in us every single time you come in.

So thank you. Genuinely. For choosing ORA CHIRO. For telling your friends and family. For being curious about your health in a way that goes deeper than just "fixing" something.

Here's to the next three years. 🚀

"Oh, so you just crack backs?" 👀🤦‍♀️

Here's what that crack actually is. When a spinal joint is adjusted, the pressure change inside the joint capsule causes dissolved carbon dioxide gas to rapidly release. That's the sound. It's called cavitation. It's harmless, and it has nothing to do with whether the adjustment was effective.

Some adjustments produce the sound. Many don't. Neither one is better or worse.

What actually matters is what's happening neurologically. Is the joint moving properly? Is the brain getting better quality information from that spinal segment?

That's what changes outcomes. Not the noise.

Chiropractic, done well, is a neuroscience-based intervention. It works by restoring proper motion to spinal joints, reducing neuro-biomechanical stress, and improving the quality of the signals your nervous system sends and receives.

It's sophisticated. It adds life to your years. And it's far more than cracking backs.

How many sleep apps have you tried? How many pillows have you bought?
How many sleepy teas, screen time limits and melatonin gummies?

Here's something that probably hasn't come up... your spine.

Your nervous system plays a central role in how your body transitions between alert and rest states, including heart rate variability and the shift from sympathetic (alert) to parasympathetic (rest and digest) activity.

When your spine has areas of stress or dysfunction, your nervous system can get stuck in sympathetic overdrive. It's like trying to sleep with the alarm going off. The body literally cannot downregulate properly.

Chiropractic adjustments work directly on the spine and nervous system. Ever wonder why you feel so relaxed after your adjustment?

Research shows they reduce sympathetic nervous system activity, increase parasympathetic tone, and improve heart rate variability, all markers of better sleep quality.

We regularly hear from people who came in for neck pain and mentioned they started sleeping much better. We don't think that's a coincidence.

If you're exhausted and nothing is working, it might be worth looking at what's happening in your nervous system.

Your nervous system is the most remarkable thing you own.

Right now, without you thinking about it for a single second, it's regulating your heart rate, coordinating your digestion, managing your immune response, and keeping you upright and breathing.

It never clocks off.

And it does all of this through one remarkable communication highway = your spine.

So here's what I want you to consider. When there's tension, stress, or restriction in your spine, that communication gets disrupted. Not cut off. Just turned down. Like a dimmer switch rather than a light switch.

You might not feel it. Pain is often one of the last signals your body sends.

But your nervous system feels it. And a nervous system that's working at less than its full capacity means a body that's slower to recover, slower to adapt, and less able to thrive.

This is why chiropractic care isn't just about pain.

It's about making sure your body's most important communication system is clear, free, and fully switched on.
