Bronson possibly rethinking his life choices after an 11hr shift which isn’t quite over yet… still need to get home and sort the horses. Oh and we haven’t had time for lunch yet 🙈 🤤

2 dogs for maintenance sessions

2 people treated with Winback TECAR therapy for neck/ shoulder pain/ tightness

1 horse for a mid endurance season check…. Very much enjoyed his session with lots of active stretching going on!

1 horse on the VIP plan having his regular treatments

And 1 horse having their second Winback treatment for a collateral ligament in the hoof- another post coming on this one.

Now home to feed my lot then find some lunch and get through the days reports before another busy day tomorrow!

As a Veterinary physiotherapist and life long horse lover I am passionate about improving the welfare of horses.

Over the years I have seen many cases of horses in pain due to issues that could have been prevented or spotted sooner.

Through research and advances in all aspects of horse care we have come a long way. We know so much more than we did 10, 20, 30 years ago but I feel the equine world would agree with me when I say more can be done.

More needs to be done.

Because every day I am out assessing and treating horses I find the same issues come up again and again.

These are often little issues that go unnoticed over time until they create a problem we can no longer fail to notice.

There is no blame, no wrong doing by the owners. We just merely don't know what we dont know.

And so I found myself explaining the same things on a daily basis while coming to the realisation I am only coming into contact with a tiny minority of the equine world. Even then, there is only so much information I can give to each person in a single session without overwhelming owners and forgetting.

So here I am in the online space.....on a mission.... to help more owners so they can help more horses.

Together as an equine community we can improve the lives of our own horses just by being a little more aware and a little more skilled at what we do.
We can ensure we are giving our horses the best chance of a long, healthy life that they can enjoy and we can enjoy with them... whatever that looks like for you.
It doesn't matter if you are aiming for a 2* event or you just want to hack 2 miles down the lane a few times a week.

Every horse matters.

I would love as many horse owners as possible to join me on my mission. To support you in improving your horses performance and wellbeing. By joining the Horsepower physio club you will have the knowledge and skills to ensure you are giving your horse the best.

I need your help though. To make this club amazing and provide the best I can for you, I need your feedback. In return you will get lifetime 50% discounted membership as a thankyou for your contribution- meaning you get lifetime access for just £10 a month!

🌼 Ragwort Season Is Here – Don’t Ignore It! 🌼

If you have horses, checking your fields for ragwort should be part of your regular pasture management.

⚠️ Why is ragwort dangerous?

Ragwort contains toxins that can cause serious and irreversible liver damage in horses. The damage is cumulative, meaning small amounts eaten over time can build up and cause problems months or even years later.

Many horses will avoid fresh ragwort because it tastes bitter, but once it dies and dries out (for example in hay or after being pulled and left in the field), it becomes more palatable while remaining toxic.

🐴 Signs of ragwort poisoning may include:
• Weight loss
• Poor performance
• Lethargy
• Behaviour changes
• Photosensitivity (sunburn-like reactions on white areas)
• Neurological symptoms in severe cases

🌱 Tips for pulling ragwort safely:

✅ Wear gloves – the plant can irritate skin and contains toxic compounds.

✅ Pull before it flowers and sets seed.

✅ Remove as much of the root as possible to reduce regrowth.

✅ Pull when the ground is damp if possible, as roots come out more easily.

✅ Bag up and dispose of plants safely.

❌ Never leave pulled ragwort in the field. Horses may ignore growing plants but can eat wilted ragwort.

❌ Don’t put it where horses can access it over a fence.

📅 A few minutes spent checking fields regularly can prevent a potentially devastating problem later on.

Have you done your ragwort check this week? I’ve done mine today and collected more than I expected there to be. Hopefully reduces the amount we get next year none had flowered yet

Booking an appointment...

Here are some handy tips when booking a physiotherapy appointment
✅ The best way to contact me is through text or WhatsApp: 07513626838
✅ Plan in advance- some weeks I may have last minute space and others I'm full for 4-6 weeks in advance so try to plan ahead
✅ Send me some info up front: who its for? (you, your horse, dog, how many?), what the problem is or just maintenance? Your location? How urgent you are? Any days/ times you definitely can/ cant do? This saves lots of messages back and forth
✅ To make the appointment once date and time are confirmed I need the n name of who's having the appointment ie horses names, a surname for the person/ animal, a contact number and email address. This ensures you get a booking confirmation with all the details you need as well as a reminder by email/ text 4 days before the appointment

Are you sure your horse is happy under saddle?

There are many different ‘behaviours’ that horses can display under saddle. In some cases, particularly young horses it can be a lack of understanding and the rider not giving a clear enough aid as to what they are asking. In most cases though if your horse is displaying negative behaviours it’s because there is something wrong.

Some of the common behaviours include bucking, napping, putting ears back, tail swishing, reluctance to go forwards.

Some of the less subtle signs include opening of the mouth, a ‘glazed over’ expression, frequent blinking, head above the vertical for prolonged periods.

Now many of the latter issues we are not going to be able to see as the rider so it can be hard to really know if your horse is starting to show signs of pain, especially in those stoic type horses who are more complacent and put up with things for longer.

Sue Dyson is a very well known researcher and passionate about animal welfare- as am I! She created a checklist of 24 common behaviours linked to pain after watching thousands of horses being ridden across different disciplines.

Horses scoring 8 or above are most likely suffering from pain in some form. This could be muscular pain, pain due to poor saddle fit, joint pain etc.

So next time you ride, have a think, really observe your horse as much as you can from what you see in the saddle. Is your horse trying to tell you something? Often all we need to do is learn how to listen.

If you would like a full assessment with eyes on the ground I have trained in how to assess using the 24 point ridden behavioural guide with Sue Dyson herself. I offer this as part of my extended equine physiotherapy sessions which includes up to 30min of ridden observation (less if your horse is really unhappy under saddle and not safe to continue).

If you would like more information just drop me a message 😊

This lovely boy showing off his stretchy downward dog last week.

There are 3 types of stretching

𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 isn't very effective- passive stretching means we do it for them. Now in human physio it can be used for contractures however the evidence is very low for it. The point is with humans we can ask them to relax (and generally they still don't relax fully!). Horses don't relax on verbal command. When you are just pulling on a limb most of the time the horse can resist you or pull back which isn't true stretching at all. If anything we could do more harm than good.

𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 is a little different. The horse does some of the stretching with a little help from us. An example can be when we do limb stretches. I always advise owners to take what movement the horse offers, wait for them to relax and offer more and then guide them into that bigger stretch. If they start resisting and pulling away you are usually asking too much too soon. This is the most common form of stretching we tend to do and its a process of give and take.

𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 for me is the best stretching. This is when the horse offers the stretch themselves and they have much more control in their movement and more likely to actually be stretching and mobilising the body- not resisting the handler. Often we start the stretch and then they go into it fully on their own. You may have experienced this when picking out your horses back feet and they fully extend the leg out and have a good stretch!

These images are a bit of a mix between active assisted and active stretching. He was becoming quite fidgety and rocking back like he wanted to go into a stretch after I had released the tension over his back. I often find by lifting a front limb and bringing it forward that the horse then leans back and goes into a full stretch. (he is the one pulling back, I'm not pulling on the leg but slowly guiding it back to the ground so he can stretch rather than dropping it and him slapping the ground).

My next stretching guide will be available in the support membership and on my website soon!

I can book appointments as far ahead as you like to ensure you get a space.

June is now closed to new bookings as I've had an influx of veterinary referrals for Winback treatments to fit in and July I have less availability as I will be taking a week off for pony club camp 😊. August will likely have more dates added when I know if we are going away or not.
