🌿 Getting Outside — The Best Thing We Can Do for Each Other & Ourselves
The recent, unexpectedly hot weather can be regarded as a mixed blessing. The glorious sunshine we’ve experienced has encouraged many of us to get outside a bit more but the excessive heat has made every day life a challenge, not least for my canine companions Connie and Lottie who have been struggling to keep cool. If you’ve been struggling to sleep or have been trying to work outside, a little respite from the soaring temperatures looks to be on the way.
As we move into June and hopefully enjoy a little more sunshine with a little less intense heat, it's the perfect time to think about the simple but powerful benefits of daylight, fresh air, movement, and connection.
One of the simplest and most powerful things we can do for our health is to get outside more. Nature is incredibly regulating for the nervous system — it helps us slow down, breathe differently, move more naturally, and reconnect, both with ourselves and with others.
Natural daylight plays an important role in supporting:
Vitamin D production
Healthy sleep cycles
Mood and emotional wellbeing
Nervous system regulation
Immune function
Energy levels
Even small amounts of time outdoors each day can make a meaningful difference. Whether it's a walk, gardening, eating lunch outside, playing sport, or simply sitting in the sunshine with a cup of tea — it all counts.
A patient recently shared something that really stayed with me. Three friends take turns spending two hours together each week gardening at one another's homes. They move, chat, laugh, support each other, and enjoy being outdoors together. What a wonderful example of connection, movement, purpose, and community — all in one afternoon.
For me personally, I love walking with Connie and Lottie and playing netball — and yes, that includes during winter too! Sometimes we wait for the "perfect" weather, but often the real benefit comes from simply getting outside consistently.
☀️ A quick note on Vitamin D in the UK: sunlight is our main source of Vitamin D during the spring and summer months. Vitamin D supports bone and joint health, muscle function, immune health, and mood regulation. Safe sun exposure, regular outdoor movement, and a balanced diet all help support healthy levels. If you're concerned about your Vitamin D levels, please speak to your GP.
So this month, I'd love to ask you:
What will you do outside this June? 🌿

🥕 Recipe of the Month — Homemade Hummus & Veggie Sticks
A firm favourite in our house — simple, nutritious, and perfect for lunches, snacks, or sharing outdoors in the sunshine.
You'll need:
1 tin chickpeas, drained
2 tbsp tahini
Juice of 1 lemon
1 garlic clove
2 tbsp olive oil
A little water to blend
Pinch of sea salt
Blend until smooth and serve with carrot sticks, cucumber, peppers, celery, and sugar snap peas.
A brilliant way to support healthy snacking while adding fibre, protein, and healthy fats — and the kids love it too! 🥕
