Have you noticed this on the pavement and wondered what it is? Well, it's the result of all of those ripe blackberries I was on about. The blackbirds are eating them and this is their poo 💩 🤣 and as there's no rain it isn't washing away 😅

So today is eclipse day 🌑 here's some info.

Blaenau Gwent is expected to get a really impressive partial solar eclipse. It’s a particularly good one for South Wales: roughly 93% of the Sun will be obscured around maximum eclipse.

The approximate timetable is:

6:15–6:16pm — the Moon starts moving across the Sun
7:12–7:13pm — maximum eclipse 🌒about 93% of the Sun covered
8:06–8:07pm — eclipse finishes

It lasts nearly two hours, but the really interesting bit will be around 7pm–7:25pm.

It won't become completely dark, because Blaenau Gwent isn't in the path of totality. Totality crosses Greenland, Iceland and northern Spain. But with more than 90% obscuration, the daylight should become noticeably dimmer and rather strange-looking. This is one of the most substantial eclipses visible from the UK for decades.

🏔️ The important thing is not simply getting as high as possible — it's having an unobstructed view towards the western sky, because the Sun will already be getting fairly low.

And one important warning: don't look at the Sun through sunglasses, a phone camera, binoculars or a camera viewfinder. Proper eclipse viewers should be used, ordinary sunglasses aren't enough.

27 years almost to the day after the great 1999 eclipse, we get another huge one. 🌒

The next really huge partial eclipse isn't until 3 September 2081, when up to 99% will be covered in parts of Britain. The next total solar eclipse visible from the UK is 23 September 2090.

Blackberries are ripening quite early in Wales this year. Early August isn’t unheard of, but the main blackberry season traditionally gets going from mid-August into September, with some continuing into October 🫐

And the old “don’t pick blackberries after Michaelmas” folklore refers to 29th September— supposedly the Devil spoils them after that! 😈🤣

The Hummingbird Heatwave of 26 🥰

These are actually day flying moths, which is why they're so noticeable.
They hover in front of flowers and drink nectar using an extraordinarily long proboscis, rather like drinking through a straw.
They're powerful migrants. Many of the moths we see have travelled to Britain from southern Europe and even North Africa.
They have excellent memories for feeding sites and may return repeatedly to the same flowerbeds at roughly the same time each day.
They're completely harmless to people and are useful pollinators.

☀️ The Butterfly Conservation says that we're seeingso many this year because the hot summer and southerly winds have produced larger arrivals.

They're one of those insects that make you stop whatever you're doing when one suddenly appears 🥰 So keep looking for those little glimmers 😁
