Most people don’t ring us with a tidy list of what they need.

They call because something has shifted. Mum isn’t eating properly. Dad has had a fall and it’s shaken everyone. The nights have got harder. They’re not sure what care looks like—or whether they even need it yet.

That’s absolutely fine. You don’t have to have it all worked out before you ring. Helping you work it out is our job.

We’ll ask a few questions, listen properly, and tell you honestly what we think. If home care isn’t right for you, we’ll say so and point you towards something more suitable.

Choosing home care for someone you love is a big decision — and it's hard to know what to even ask. So here are five questions worth putting to any provider. Including us. 👇

1. Who will actually visit — and will we see the same faces? Continuity is everything. A rotating cast of strangers isn't care.

2. What happens if a Care Professional is off sick? There should be a plan, not a scramble.

3. How do you keep the family in the loop? You should be able to see what's happening from your phone — not chase for updates.

4. Can visit times flex around our routine? Care should fit your life, not the other way round.

5. Would you be happy with this care for your own dad? It's the question we ask ourselves before every single visit.

This came from the daughter of a gentleman we cared for — her dad. She told us nothing was ever too much trouble, and that our Care Professionals were always on time and attentive.

At Otter Homecare, initiative isn't about going it alone or guessing. It's about noticing the small things, and knowing what to do about them.

A skipped meal. A quieter mood than usual. A walking stick that's suddenly being leaned on a little harder. Our Care Professionals get to know their clients well enough to spot when something's changed and they're trusted to act on it.

Sometimes that's gently stepping in there and then. Sometimes it's flagging it to the office or the family so the right support can follow. Always thoughtfully, and always in line with each person's care plan.

Because the little things, noticed early, are often exactly what keep someone safe, well and happy at home.
