Hearing is the process of converting sound waves in the environment into electrical signals that the brain can interpret as meaningful sounds such as speech, music, or noise

👂🏻Sound waves are collected by the pinna and travel down the ear canal.
👂🏻The sound waves cause the eardrum to vibrate.
👂🏻Vibrations pass through the ossicles (malleus, incus, and stapes), which amplify the sound.
👂🏻The stapes pushes against the oval window, creating pressure waves in the fluid of the cochlea.
👂🏻These fluid waves move the basilar membrane, causing the hair cells in the Organ of Corti to bend.
👂🏻Bending of the hair cells generates electrical impulses.
👂🏻The auditory nerve carries these impulses to the auditory cortex of the brain, where they are interpreted as meaningful sounds

When you get any wax blockages in front of the eardrum this will make the hearing feel muffled. The same will apply with any congestion behind the eardrum

We often get asked how often should you have your ears checked and ear wax removed

The honest answer, is there is no known time scale, and it is just one of those things!
Some people need their ears cleaning more regularly than others.

Earwax is perfectly normal, it protects your ears by collecting dust, dirt or bacteria, and also keeps the ears moisturised.
Believe it or not, most ears naturally clean themselves, and we won’t remove if minimal wax is present as this is considered healthy.

If you are experiencing any of the issues below then you may benefit from an ear check

• Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)

Sometimes it’s not just wax in the ears.

This gentleman had had a blocked ear for the last couple of weeks, and assumed it was wax. On examination it was quickly identified that a dome from his hearing aid had detached in his ear, and was stuck in-situ.
We carefully removed the dome using Microsuction and some fine ended crocs.
His ear is now clear, and he is able to hear again.
