Families often ask “what is a direct cremation”?…..

A direct cremation is a simple cremation that takes place without a funeral service, ceremony, or mourners attending at the crematorium.

The person is cared for by the funeral director, all necessary arrangements and paperwork are completed, and the cremation takes place on an agreed date. The ashes are then returned to the family, who can choose to hold a personal memorial, celebration of life, or scattering ceremony at a later time and place that is meaningful to them.

At Carlyon Funeral Directors, a direct cremation still includes the same high standard of care and dignity as any other funeral. Families can visit their loved one in our chapel of rest if they wish, choose clothing, provide personal items, select music for the committal, and receive support throughout the process.

Many families choose a direct cremation because it is a simpler and often more affordable option. Gives flexibility to hold a memorial later. Reflects the wishes of the person who has died.

A direct cremation is simply a different type of farewell, it does not mean any less love, care, or respect. ❤️

A simple farewell can still be a meaningful one. ❤️

On Thursday, 28th May, we said farewell to Martin Ramon José Hubbard, a much-loved husband, father, brother, uncle and friend, who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, Martin, aged 57 years, of Mount Hawke, left behind a lifetime of treasured memories and a family who adored him. A devoted husband to Vanessa, a very proud father to Kieran and Josh, a cherished brother to Shane, Shelley and Maxine, a dear brother-in-law, and a much-loved uncle, nephew, cousin and friend to many.

Martin dedicated many years of his life to working for the AA, where he earned the respect and admiration of colleagues and customers alike. Known for his kindness, professionalism and willingness to help others, he made a lasting impact on so many lives.

It was a moving tribute to see Martin’s friends and former AA colleagues turn out in force to accompany him on his final journey, a reflection of the esteem and affection in which he was held.

Surrounded by the love of his family, Martin’s life was celebrated through heartfelt tributes, treasured memories and shared stories of a life well lived. It was a privilege for all of us at Carlyon Funeral Directors to support Vanessa, Kieran, Josh and the wider Hubbard family in arranging such a fitting and personal farewell.

Rest peacefully, Martin. You will never be forgotten. 💙

On Tuesday 26th May, we said goodbye to a truly remarkable gentleman, Timothy ‘Tim’ Cookman ❤️🏍️

A devoted husband to Sylvia, a much-loved dad to Ross & Rachael, a dear father-in-law to Natalie & Tony, an incredibly proud grandad to Bethany, Jordon, Ashton, Bradley, Taylor & Holly, and a cherished uncle and friend to many.

Tim was the very definition of a true Cornish gentleman; kind, humble, loyal and always ready to help others without hesitation.

He dedicated so much of his life to Cornwall Blood Bikes, proudly supporting our NHS and the communities of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Whether attending late-night call outs, supporting colleagues and friends, or escorting Santa through St Agnes, Tim wore his uniform with immense pride and brought warmth, laughter and kindness everywhere he went.

He touched countless lives and made a difference to so many people.

At Carlyon Funeral Directors, it was an absolute honour to support Tim’s family and help arrange a farewell worthy of such a respected and deeply loved gentleman.

On Tuesday, Tim left his family home in Blackwater for his final journey along the A30, accompanied by his Cornwall Blood Bikes and RoSPA friends and colleagues, travelling the very roads he had spent years driving whilst helping others.

The turnout was truly incredible and a reflection of just how loved and admired Tim was. Thank you to everyone who attended on motorbikes, lined the route, was present at the service or simply stood in quiet support for Tim and his family during one of the hardest times in their lives.

The world truly needs more people like Tim.

Ride safe, Tim ❤️
Thank you for your service, your kindness, your love, friendship and the smiles you brought to so many lives.

A heartfelt thank you to Jayne, Jim and all of the Blood Bikers for helping give Tim the send-off he so richly deserved.

Thank you to flowers by Diane at Chy-An-Brea for the stunning flowers.

Thinking of Tim’s family at this incredibly sad time ❤️….

Spud, Les and I have just returned from Camborne crematorium where we represented Oll an Gwella at the funeral of Tim Cookman who was a member of the Cornwall Blood Bikes team.
There was standing room only and even then many of the mourners were unable to get into the building.
It was amazing to see the whole fleet of Blood Bikes lined up outside having escorted Tim on his final, earthly journey.
(Thanks to Spud for the photo).

Years ago, I boarded a coach in Redruth heading to Scotland.

A whole week surrounded by strangers, yet there was one lady I instantly connected with; Debbie..

We laughed, chatted, and by the end of the trip had formed a lovely friendship.

I remember when my mum’s finger suddenly became badly swollen, without hesitation, she calmly helped remove her ring using cotton.

Problem solved, and our friendship carried on long after the trip ended.

Then, on Sunday 12th May this year, I received a message that broke my heart:

“Andrea, I’ve lost my dear son… please help me.”

From that moment, I was there through it all… the late-night messages, the phone calls to calm anxieties, the tears, the memories, and the overwhelming love for a much-loved son.

Last night, I messaged our team to express just how proud and grateful I was for everything they had done. Together, we truly gave Scott the send-off he deserved.

Such a beautiful and personal service, lovingly created by his family. Scott would have been incredibly proud.

Rest peacefully Scott, your mum’s beautiful blue-eyed boy 💙
