Masking is a topic that I have conflicting opinions on.

On the one hand, it’s a useful skill that helps genuinely keep you safe in certain situations, and can help start building relationships, succeeding at work and in other social aspects of life.

However, neurodivergent people shouldn’t feel the need to suppress who they are, in order to be accepted by society. When you have learnt to mask successfully, people will often expect more of you and not understand how difficult it can be to navigate the world because you’re doing such a great job of hiding it!

A lot of neurodivergent people also say that they’ve masked for so long, they’ve lost who they actually are.

When I work with clients, I offer a safe space to learn how to unmask and learn how cope in different situations. By getting you out of your primitive brain and into your intellectual brain, you learn how to make clearer, more rational decisions and have the ability to be successful as your authentic self.

September can feel like a fresh start… but for many parents, it can also feel like the moment the invisible load suddenly doubles. 😅

School emails. Clubs. Uniforms. PE kits. Packed lunches. Work deadlines. Early mornings. The list goes on!

It’s no wonder that what starts as a hopeful “new term, new routine” can quickly turn into overwhelm and survival mode.

The good news? You don’t need a perfectly colour-coded schedule or a complete life overhaul to feel more in control.

In her latest blog, Desiree Mackenzie from Inspired To Change Bromley shares some simple, realistic ways to reduce back-to-school stress.

And remember, you don’t have to wait until you’re completely overwhelmed before you decide something needs to change.

Back to school stress can tip you into survival mode fast. Here's what's happening in your brain, and what actually helps.

And we're off!

Today we had our very first Inspired To Connect Networking meeting in Tonbridge, and it was such a lovely morning.

Lots of great conversation, genuine connections and getting to know the brilliant people behind a range of local businesses. It was exactly the kind of atmosphere I hoped this group would create.

Thank you to those who came along and helped make our first meeting such a positive start!

Our next meeting is Monday 21st September, 9:30–11:30am.

If you'd like to come along, meet some other local business owners and see what Inspired To Connect is all about, you can book your free place here:

The other day I found myself sitting curled up on the sofa, working by the open window.

It was raining outside. I could hear the soft patter of the raindrops, feel the cool breeze coming through the window and I realised, I wasn't rushing around trying to get on with the next thing, I was enjoying working at a slower, easier pace and I felt so calm. A calm I don’t often experience.

It made me think about how much our sensory environment can influence how we feel, particularly for autistic and otherwise neurodivergent people.

We often talk about sensory overload, but sensory input isn't always something we need to escape from. Sometimes, the right sensory input can actually help us feel MORE settled and regulated.

For me that morning, it was the sound of the rain, the cool air and the quiet.

I do think it's worth noticing those moments-
we can get very good at identifying what overwhelms us (the list can often feel endless!) but how often do we stop and ask ourselves:

What actually feels good to my brain?

Maybe it's rain against the window. Maybe it's music, a weighted blanket, being outside, a particular texture, complete silence or having your favourite mug in your hands.

What helps you feel regulated?

"Not every day is a good day but there’s something good in every day"

One of the first things we ask our clients to do is to start making a note of what has been good each day.

It doesn't have to be anything big. Just the small things we notice like a favourite song on the radio, a smile, a compliment...

It may seem like a small, insignificant thing to do but it helps our brain to put our challenges in context, to see a more balanced view of our days.

And the science shows us that doing this simple of task of looking for one good thing each day, actively changes the information our brain is choosing to show us.

Why not give it a go and notice the difference it makes to how you view your days?

Tiny Tools, Big Brain Benefits

This week's tool is:

🧠Visualise a successful month🧠

What if you could give your brain a little rehearsal for the month you want to have?

Visualisation isn't simply daydreaming about everything going perfectly. When you vividly imagine an experience, your brain can activate many of the same areas involved in actually doing it.

This is one of the reasons we use positive visualisation regularly in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy.

When you repeatedly imagine yourself responding differently, coping well, or moving towards something you want, you're repeatedly activating the neural pathways associated with those thoughts and responses. The more those pathways are activated, the more familiar they can become.

So this week, try visualising a successful month ahead. What would you be doing? How would you be feeling? How would you respond when things don't go quite to plan?

Give your brain something positive to practise.
