Many doctors, other professionals’ researchers and indeed a huge majority of people believe that BMI is an outdated and limiting tool limited tool for numerous reasons.

• It doesn’t distinguish muscle from fat or reflect fat distribution.
• It fails to account for ethnic, gender, and genetic differences.
• Better measures (like waist-to-hip ratio, body fat percentage, and metabolic health indicators) are increasingly preferred.
• It is detrimental to many eating disorder patients seeking the medical support they need and deserve.

How many people reading this have been discriminated against because of their BMI?

On our recent live NEDDE training on AuDHD we were incredibly fortunate to have four amazing professionals discussing their lived experiences of being both ADHD and Autistic of which the delegates were so grateful to learn from. Research suggests that 50-70% of autistics are also ADHD (Wang et al., 2017) and yet until 2014, you could not be diagnosed as AuDHD, it was believed that you could only be ADHD or Autistic, how was that even possible? How many of you have only recently recognised that you are indeed both, and how many professionals working therapeutically are seeing this more and more of both in your clients?

Awareness of sensory differences cultivates empathy, patience, and social acceptance. It challenges the idea that everyone experiences the world the same way and promotes respect for neurodiversity as a normal part of human variation. Understanding sensory sensitivities in neurodivergent individuals is not just about accommodation—it’s about valuing diverse ways of experiencing the world and ensuring everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Even as a neurodivergent individual with list of ND labels that take a while to write down, I had 'missed' neurodivergence in certain clients, especially those whose mask for survival was so firmly embedded in the very essence of their being and for that I am truly sorry. Following on from the latter, I enjoyed the analogy of the telescope, as now we all know what we now know, I believe that we have a societal obligation to ensure accommodations are threaded throughout our society. Like so many other things in life, once something is truly seen and understood it is hard to be unseen and I feel that is now the case for neurodivergent individuals, for which I am so grateful for.
