Another month has passed, and Bobby is growing fast... but still no teeth!

Despite this, there are definitely plenty of signs that teething is underway. Like many babies, Bobby is dribbling more, chewing on anything he can get his hands on, and constantly looking for something to soothe his gums.

One thing many parents don't realise is that teething can take much longer than you think. Sometimes it feels certain that a tooth is about to appear, but babies can show signs of teething for weeks or even months before those first little teeth finally break through.

Just because you can't see a tooth yet doesn't mean your baby isn't uncomfortable.

Some things that can help soothe sore gums include:
✔️ Teething rings
✔️ Teething toys cooled in the fridge
✔️ Soft silicone teething toys
✔️ Teething mittens or gloves with textured edges for babies who aren't yet able to hold toys themselves

Every baby's teething journey is different, but keeping an eye out for the signs and offering comfort when needed can make a big difference.

We'll keep you updated on Bobby's progress next month. Perhaps those first teeth will finally make an appearance!

One of the most common questions we hear from parents is: "Do I really need to bring my child to the dentist if they only have baby teeth?"

The answer is a resounding yes!

Regular dental visits from a young age help children become familiar with the sights, sounds, and friendly faces at the practice. This acclimatisation is incredibly important. If treatment is ever needed in the future, children who have attended regularly are often much more relaxed and confident because the dental environment isn't new or intimidating.

Early visits also allow us to focus on prevention:
✔️ Advice on healthy diets and reducing sugar intake
✔️ Age-appropriate toothbrushing tips
✔️ Monitoring how teeth are developing
✔️ Fluoride varnish applications to help strengthen teeth and reduce the risk of decay

Perhaps most importantly, regular check-ups allow us to spot any signs of decay early. When caught quickly, treatment may be as simple as a small filling that many children can tolerate well. If decay is left untreated, it can progress and sometimes lead to teeth needing to be removed, which can be a much more challenging experience for a child.

The best dental treatment is often the treatment that's never needed.

That's why we're passionate about helping families establish healthy habits early and keeping little smiles healthy as they grow.

The summer holidays are all about making memories, enjoying days out, and of course, the occasional ice cream, ice lolly, or sweet treat!

The good news is that children can still enjoy their favourite treats while protecting their teeth. It's all about making the right choices and developing healthy habits.

Top tips for protecting young smiles this summer:
✔️ Enjoy sugary treats as part of a meal rather than frequent snacks throughout the day
✔️ Try to limit the number of "sugar hits" your child's teeth receive
✔️ Encourage water instead of sugary drinks between meals
✔️ Choose no sugar snacks where possible
✔️ Make sure children brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste

Many parents focus on how much sugar their child is having, but it's often how frequently they have it that matters most. Every time we eat or drink something sugary, the bacteria in our mouths produce acids that can attack the teeth. The more often this happens, the greater the risk of tooth decay.

Our children's dentistry team is passionate about helping young patients develop healthy habits that last a lifetime. Regular dental visits allow us to monitor your child's oral health, provide preventative advice, and keep their smile healthy as they grow.

Enjoy the summer holidays, the sunshine, and the treats. Just remember to look after those little teeth too!

Did you know that even children who brush their teeth well can still be at risk of developing decay in their back teeth?...
03/08/2026

Did you know that even children who brush their teeth well can still be at risk of developing decay in their back teeth?

This is because all teeth have natural grooves on their biting surfaces. In some children, these grooves can be particularly deep, making it difficult for a toothbrush to reach the very bottom. As a result, bacteria and food particles can remain trapped, increasing the risk of tooth decay over time.

What are fissure sealants?

Fissure sealants are a protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. They seal over the deep grooves, creating a smoother surface that is easier to keep clean and less likely to develop decay.

✔️ Quick and painless treatment
✔️ No drilling required
✔️ Helps protect newly erupted adult teeth
✔️ Reduces the risk of cavities and future fillings
✔️ Ideal for children who find it difficult to clean their back teeth effectively

Fissure sealants are one of the simplest and most effective preventative treatments available. Applied when the adult molars first come through, they can help protect your child's smile for years to come.

Prevention is always better than cure, especially when it comes to growing smiles!

Does the thought of an ice cream or ice-cold drink make your teeth twinge?

You're not alone. Tooth sensitivity is a common problem, especially during the warmer months when we're enjoying cold treats and refreshing drinks.

Why does it happen?
Sensitivity occurs when the protective layer of your tooth becomes worn, exposing tiny channels that lead to the nerve inside the tooth. When something cold touches the tooth, you feel that sharp, uncomfortable sensation.

What can help?
Using a sensitive toothpaste can make a big difference. These toothpastes work by gradually building up a protective barrier over the exposed areas of the tooth, helping to block the sensation of cold from reaching the nerve.

✔️ Use it twice a day
✔️ Be consistent. It can take a few weeks to reach its full effect
✔️ Continue using it long-term to maintain the protective barrier

If your sensitivity is new, severe, or seems to be getting worse, it's worth booking a dental check-up. Sensitivity can sometimes be a sign of tooth wear, gum recession, or other dental issues that may need attention.

Enjoy your summer treats. Without the toothache!

We're delighted to introduce Amy, one of the newest members of the Tunbridge Wells Dental Centre team!

As a Dental Nurse, Amy plays a vital role in supporting our dentists, assisting with treatments, and helping patients feel comfortable and cared for throughout their visit.

We thought it would be fun to help everyone get to know Amy a little better, so we've asked her a few questions...

1️⃣ What inspired you to become a Dental Nurse?
Having been a nervous dental patient myself, I understand how important it is to feel comfortable and reassured during appointments. That experience inspired me to become a Dental Nurse so I can help support patients, especially those who feel anxious, and make their visits as positive and stress-free as possible.

2️⃣ What's your favourite part of working at Tunbridge Wells Dental Centre so far?
My favourite part has been working alongside such a friendly, supportive, and professional team. The facilities are excellent, and it’s a pleasure to care for such lovely patients every day.

3️⃣ What's one piece of oral health advice you'd give to every patient?
Don’t wait until something hurts to visit the dentist ! Checkups every 6 months help to keep everything on track and prevent problems.

4️⃣ If you could travel anywhere in the world tomorrow, where would you go and why?
It’s a tricky decision between 2 places . I would love to visit Palawan in the Philippines because of its stunning natural beauty, crystal-clear waters, and incredible beaches. Finland would also be high on my list for its peaceful, remote landscapes and beautiful scenery.

5️⃣ Tell us a fun fact about yourself that your colleagues or patients might not know!
A fun fact about me is that growing up I was a dancer , danced for around 14 years ! One of the most memorable performances was performing at silverstone in the F1 paddock.

Welcome to the team, Amy. We're so pleased to have you with us!

Do you feel anxious about visiting the dentist?

You're not alone. Many people avoid dental appointments due to fear, previous bad experiences, or worries about treatment. At Tunbridge Wells Dental Centre, helping nervous patients feel comfortable and confident is one of our specialities.

In fact, one of our recent patients, Les, shared this incredible review:

"I've had a fear of the dentist since I was 4. After having two of my main teeth out here at age 30, I finally no longer have any fear of the dentist at all. I couldn't recommend this dentist anymore. So kind, careful and efficient. I'm over the moon with the service all round. 11/10."

Our team takes the time to listen, understand your concerns, and work at a pace that feels right for you. We can even arrange a visit to meet the team before any treatment takes place, helping you build confidence and feel more at ease.

Whether you've missed a few appointments or haven't seen a dentist for years, you'll never be judged. We're simply here to help.

Take the first step today and find out how we can help you feel comfortable in the dental chair again.

Thank you, Les, for taking the time to share your experience.

We know that visiting the dentist can be daunting for many people, especially if you've had difficult experiences in the past. That's why our team works hard to create a calm, supportive environment where every patient feels listened to, understood, and cared for.

Helping someone overcome a lifelong fear of the dentist is one of the greatest compliments we can receive, and we're delighted that Les now feels comfortable and confident attending appointments.

Thank you for your trust and kind words.
