This time last week we were out on the water completing our RYA Powerboat Level 2 qualification — and what an experience it turned out to be.

Spending two full days learning new skills, building confidence, and getting hands‑on with proper powerboat handling was brilliant in itself … but doing it alongside like‑minded veterans made it something special. Being around people who “get it” — the humour, the banter, the teamwork, the graft — created an atmosphere you just don’t find anywhere else.
We pushed each other, supported each other, and had a good laugh along the way.

Practical skills in boat handling, safety, navigation, and decision‑making

A confidence boost from stepping outside the comfort zone

Put a veteran in a room and ask them to talk, and we call it support.

Put that same veteran on a boat, give them a challenge, a role, a crew, and a reason to rely on others again…

…and people call it sailing.

Maybe we’ve underestimated what happens when people rediscover purpose, confidence and belonging — not through a programme, but through doing something meaningful together.

On the 15th & 16th August, Veterans Connect North is taking veterans onto Lake Windermere for an RYA Level 1 Dinghy Sailing Course.

The true cost of this experience is £400 per person.

Thanks to support, veterans pay just £100, which includes:
