🌿 Water Retention & Traditional Chinese Medicine

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), water retention, puffiness and a feeling of heaviness may be viewed as part of an underlying pattern of imbalance rather than simply a problem with fluid itself.

Depending on the individual, a TCM practitioner may consider patterns such as Spleen Qi deficiency, Spleen Yang deficiency, Kidney Yang deficiency, Dampness or Phlegm-Damp accumulation. In some cases, Qi stagnation may also form part of the overall picture.

TCM looks at the whole person when identifying a pattern. Your digestion, energy levels, urination, sleep, appetite, thirst, menstrual cycle, temperature preferences and general wellbeing may all form part of the consultation.

How can acupuncture help?

Traditional Chinese Acupuncture is traditionally used to help support the body's regulation of Qi and fluid metabolism, address patterns of Dampness and strengthen the body's functional systems according to the individual TCM diagnosis.

Treatment may also be combined with dietary and lifestyle advice, cupping or naturopathic support, depending on your individual needs.

At Serenity Acupuncture & Naturopathic Wellness Centre, every treatment begins with a detailed consultation. There is no one-size-fits-all approach β€” we look at you as a whole person, not simply one symptom.

Not sure if acupuncture is right for you?

Your first appointment at Serenity is about you.

A new patient consultation gives us time to sit down and discuss your health concerns, symptoms, lifestyle and what you'd like to achieve from treatment.

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, we look at the whole person, rather than focusing on one symptom in isolation. Your individual health picture is then considered when developing a personalised treatment approach.

As a Registered Nurse and Traditional Chinese Acupuncturist, Paul combines his nursing experience with Traditional Chinese Medicine to provide a professional, individualised approach to care.

Whether you're looking for support with pain, headaches and migraines, women's health, stress and sleep, digestive health, fatigue or general wellbeing, your consultation is the place to start.

Your first step doesn't have to be complicated.

Have a question? Not sure whether acupuncture is appropriate for you?

🌿 Understanding the 24-Hour Traditional Chinese Medicine Body Clock

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the 24-hour body clock is a traditional way of understanding how Qi (vital energy) is believed to flow through the body's meridian system throughout the day and night.

The clock divides the 24-hour period into 12 two-hour intervals, with each period traditionally associated with one of the body's major meridians and its corresponding organ system.

For example:

5am – 7am | Large Intestine
Traditionally associated with elimination and the movement of waste from the body.

7am – 9am | Stomach
A time traditionally associated with digestion and receiving nourishment, making breakfast an important meal.

9am – 11am | Spleen
Associated in TCM with the transformation of food into Qi and nourishment, as well as concentration and mental activity.

11am – 1pm | Heart
Traditionally associated with circulation, emotional wellbeing and connection.

1pm – 3pm | Small Intestine
Associated with separating what is useful from what is not, both physically and symbolically.

3pm – 5pm | Bladder
Traditionally connected with fluid metabolism and elimination.

The cycle continues through the Kidney, Pericardium, Triple Burner, Gallbladder and Liver before returning to the Large Intestine.

Why is the TCM Body Clock important?

The body clock is not simply about watching the time. In TCM, it forms part of a wider understanding of balance, lifestyle and individual health patterns.

A practitioner may consider factors such as sleep, digestion, energy, emotions and the timing of symptoms when developing a Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis.

For example, if someone consistently notices a particular symptom occurring at roughly the same time each day, this may form part of the information considered during a TCM consultation.

The TCM body clock therefore provides another way of looking at the relationship between your daily routine, your body's natural rhythms and your overall wellbeing.

At Serenity, this is considered alongside your individual health history, lifestyle and other TCM diagnostic information. No two people are treated in exactly the same way.

Traditional Chinese Medicine looks at the whole person β€” body, mind, lifestyle and patterns of health β€” rather than focusing on a single symptom in isolation.

🌿 What is Painful Cold Bi (Tong Bi) in TCM?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Bi Syndrome refers to patterns traditionally associated with obstruction of the flow of Qi and Blood through the body's channels and meridians. When Cold is considered the predominant factor, this is often described as Cold Bi or Tong Bi.

This pattern is traditionally associated with fixed, aching or stabbing discomfort, stiffness and restricted movement, with symptoms that may feel worse in cold conditions and improve with warmth. Some people may also experience greater stiffness on waking that gradually eases with movement.

From a TCM perspective, the practitioner looks at much more than the location of the discomfort. Your symptoms, general health, energy, sleep, digestion, lifestyle and other individual signs are considered together to identify your particular pattern.

How may acupuncture be used?

Traditional Chinese Acupuncture is traditionally used to help move Qi and Blood, warm and regulate the channels and address patterns of obstruction. Depending on the individual, treatment may also incorporate approaches such as cupping, moxibustion and lifestyle advice.

At Serenity, there is no one-size-fits-all treatment. Each consultation is individualised, with the aim of understanding the person behind the pain rather than simply treating the symptom.

If you're experiencing ongoing pain, stiffness or restricted movement and would like to learn more about the Traditional Chinese Medicine approach, contact Paul for more information.

🌿 What is Bi Syndrome in Traditional Chinese Medicine?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Bi Syndrome describes a pattern of pain, stiffness, heaviness or restricted movement that is traditionally understood as an obstruction of the flow of Qi and Blood through the body's channels and meridians.

The word Bi can be translated as β€œobstruction” or β€œblocked,” and TCM traditionally associates these patterns with factors such as Wind, Cold, Dampness and Heat.

Different patterns can present in different ways. For example, some people may experience moving or migrating discomfort, while others may describe pain as fixed, heavy, aching, stiff or aggravated by cold or damp conditions.

TCM therefore doesn't simply look at where the pain is. A practitioner considers the nature of the discomfort, when it occurs, what makes it better or worse, your general health, energy, sleep, digestion and other individual signs before developing a treatment approach.

How can acupuncture fit into a TCM approach?

Traditional Chinese Acupuncture is traditionally used to help regulate the flow of Qi and Blood, support circulation through the channels and reduce patterns of obstruction.

Treatment may be combined with other approaches such as cupping, moxibustion and lifestyle advice, depending on the individual presentation.

At Serenity, every consultation is personalised. The aim is to understand the person behind the symptom, rather than treating every case of pain in exactly the same way.

If you're experiencing persistent pain, stiffness or restricted movement and would like to understand how a Traditional Chinese Medicine approach may apply to you, contact Paul to arrange a consultation.

🌿 MIGRAINES β€’ HEADACHES β€’ CHRONIC FATIGUE

Recently, I've been receiving a growing number of enquiries from people experiencing migraines, cluster headaches and ongoing fatigue, asking how Traditional Chinese Medicine approaches these concerns.

Traditional Chinese Medicine looks at the individual rather than simply the symptom. During a consultation, we consider your overall health, sleep, stress levels, digestion, energy, lifestyle and other factors to build a picture of your individual pattern.

Traditional Chinese Acupuncture may then be used as part of a personalised approach to support relaxation, wellbeing, pain management and the body's natural regulatory processes.

Every person is different, which is why treatment is tailored to the individual rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.

If you're interested in finding out whether Traditional Chinese Acupuncture may be appropriate for you, or simply want to discuss your concerns, please get in touch.

🌿 Back to Routine… Time to Look After You

The school holidays are over, summer is coming to an end, and for many of us it's time to get back into our normal routines.

Like many of you, I was away for much of August β€” and since coming back I've had a full inbox with enquiries about acupuncture and treatment options.

Sometimes it's only when life slows down again that we realise just how tired, stressed or run down we've been feeling.

If you're feeling tired, sluggish, stressed, struggling with sleep, low in energy, experiencing digestive discomfort, aches, pains or simply not feeling yourself, now could be a good time to take a step back and look after your own wellbeing.

Traditional Chinese Medicine takes a whole-person approach, looking beyond a single symptom and considering your individual health, lifestyle and overall balance.

At Serenity, every consultation is individualised, with treatment tailored to you and your health goals.

🌿 Appointments are now available again.

If you'd like to find out more about Traditional Chinese Acupuncture, Naturopathic Advice or the treatments available at Serenity, get in touch.
