Go and see an osteopath!

I sometimes feel like I spend much of my time telling people they don’t need to see me, they need to see an osteopath

Why?

Because often when babies can’t feed well it’s not because there’s a physical restriction eg a tongue tie but because there’s significant muscular tension or the muscular tension is aggravating the physical restriction

Typically we see babies :

💪whose parents report they are unusually ‘strong’

➡️who have head turn preferences

🤪who have asymmetrical facial or head features

😡who seem uncomfortable in certain positions (car seats/laid down)

😮who can’t get a wide mouth to feed as they don’t tilt their heads back

😝whose tongue moves unevenly on assessment

😐whose jaw is very tight when we do an oral assessment

⚪️who have visibly thick white lingual frenula

Typically we’ll suggest a review with an osteopath for these babies as we find

- for a good proportion especially those with ‘posterior’ tongue ties, the osteopathy resolves the feeding issues without the need for any invasive procedures such as tongue tie division. Although most parents do benefit from our feeding expertise; post osteo (but we do have FREE groups 😉)

-When a division is needed anyway, osteopathy results in a longer thinner frenulum and a looser jaw making for a safer division.

- that when babies have a tongue tie division and notable tension remains untreated they seem to have a stronger tendency to tongue tie reform

So if you’ve got ongoing feeding issues think osteopath first!! (Or if you have a good chiropractor who sees a lot of babies we could live with that too!)

Osteopathy is based on the principle that the wellbeing of an individual depends on their bones, muscles, ligaments and connective tissue functioning smoothly together.

Osteopaths use physical manipulation, stretching and massage with the aim of :-

❇️increasing the mobility of joints
❇️relieving muscle tension
❇️ reducing pain
❇️enhancing the blood supply to tissues
❇️helping the body to heal

In the UK, Osteopathy is a health profession regulated by UK law.

Most people see an osteopath for:-
❇️ back pain
❇️ neck pain
❇️ shoulder pain
❇️ problems with the pelvis, hips and legs
❇️ sports injuries
❇️ muscle and joint pain associated with driving, work if pregnancy

NICE guidelines on managing lower back pain and sciatica recommend manual therapy alongside exercise as a treatment option.
