☀️ HOT WEATHER HAS ARRIVED… AND HEAT STROKE IN DOGS CAN TURN FATAL FAST ☀️

Dogs do not cope with heat the same way humans do. They cannot sweat efficiently and rely mainly on panting to cool themselves down. Once overheating begins, things can escalate rapidly from heat exhaustion to full heat stroke which is a life-threatening emergency.

Heat stroke is not simply “being too hot.” It triggers inflammation throughout the body, damages cells, affects the brain and organs, and can quickly become fatal if body temperature is not reduced fast enough.

🐾 Dogs most at risk:
• Flat-faced breeds
• Senior dogs
• Puppies
• Overweight dogs
• Dogs with heart or respiratory conditions
• Highly driven/excitable dogs

⚠️ EARLY SIGNS OF OVERHEATING:
• Excessive panting
• Drooling
• Bright red gums
• Restlessness
• Slowing down on walks
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Glassy eyes

🚨 SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE:
• Collapse
• Weakness
• Confusion/disorientation
• Thick saliva
• Pale or blue gums
• Seizures
• Loss of consciousness

PREVENTION IS EVERYTHING:

✅ Walk early morning or later evening
✅ Check pavement temperatures carefully
✅ Provide constant access to fresh water
✅ Use shaded routes and allow sniff/rest breaks
✅ Avoid repetitive ball throwing or intense exercise
✅ Use airflow, paddling pools, shade and cooling areas. Be mindful that paddling pools can become warm to hot!
✅ NEVER leave a dog in a parked car
✅ Remember conservatories and enclosed gardens can become dangerously hot as can artificial grass
✅ Allow dogs to self-regulate activity and rest

🐕 Some dogs will continue running, playing or working beyond safe limits because adrenaline overrides their natural stop signals. They rely on us to intervene before they collapse.

❄️ IF YOU SUSPECT HEAT STROKE:
Move the dog somewhere cool immediately and begin RAPID cooling while contacting a vet urgently.

Current evidence supports:
• Pouring cool-to-cold water over the body
• Using fans/airflow alongside water
• Cold wet towels UNDER the dog (not wrapped around them)
• Cold water immersion if tolerated and safe
• Allowing access to cool water if the dog is conscious and able to drink safely

(If using a garden hose to cool your dog - please run the water first - this initial water will be warm to hot).

WHY RAPID COOLING MATTERS:
The longer the body remains dangerously hot, the more damage occurs internally. Rapid cooling improves survival chances significantly and helps reduce organ and neurological damage.

‼️ REMEMBER WET FIRST, VET SECOND ‼️

❄️ CLEARING UP THE ICE & FROZEN TREAT MYTHS:

Older advice warned that ice water, ice cubes or frozen treats could cause “shock” or somehow worsen overheating. Current evidence does not support this in healthy, conscious dogs.

The far greater danger in heat stroke is failing to cool the dog quickly enough.

Frozen enrichment for dogs — such as frozen carrots, lick mats, stuffed Kongs, goat milk cubes or fruit-safe ice treats can be a perfectly appropriate way to provide hydration, enrichment and cooling during hot weather.

Ice cubes themselves are not inherently dangerous for healthy dogs when offered sensibly.

The important distinction is:
🐾 A healthy dog enjoying frozen enrichment is very different from
🚨 A dog already in severe heat stroke who needs urgent medical intervention and careful monitoring.

As always:
• Supervise dogs with frozen items
• Avoid frantic gulping
• Consider tooth health and individual sensitivities
• Never force food or water into a distressed dog

🚫 Avoid wrapping dogs in wet towels as this can trap heat against the body.

So your breastfed baby isn’t growing well? They’re dropping centiles on their chart, they have fewer dirty nappies or smaller ones, they’re fussy or overly placid ….

Commonly you’ll hear one of two plans

A. Top up with formula (or maybe expressed milk)

B. Let it go, they’re finding their own curve, as long as they’re happy and meeting their milestones and have some wet and dirty nappies just chill and weigh them less often.

These are both bad plans!!

Plan A will lead to better growth and brain development but at the expense of breastfeeding for most babies

Plan B will lead to hungry babies whose longer term growth and brain development may be compromised and who usually get worse at breastfeeding and a reduced milk supply.

You don’t have to pick. You can have Plan C

- identify the cause of the slow growth and work to fix it

- supplement appropriately to preserve growth and development while protecting breastfeeding and working on the problem

- preserve the milk supply in a way that works for your personal circumstances.

- maximise the baby’s milk intake at the breast with some simple tweaks to feeding.

Too often we see parents who have followed Plan A or Plan B for too long and both are hard to come back from.

With Plan A often supply has gone and babies have a preference for the alternative feeding method (usually a bottle)

With Plan B supply is also gone and babies are too hungry and weak to feed effectively.

If you’re worried your baby isn’t growing well, check in early with someone who suggests Plan C to get feeding back on track!

Did you know that there are different levels of feeding support available and not everyone is able to help with more complex issues?

Feeling like you’re going round in circles but getting nowhere? Been to every group and still feeling lost? It’s time to step up to an IBCLC, you’ll find us privately, in volunteer settings and in the NHS.

A cold baby cries. They tell you. An overheated baby goes quiet. The warning signs are silent. That's why overheating is more dangerous.

Overheating is the number one modifiable risk factor for SIDS. More than sleep position. More than blankets. The baby who is too warm sleeps deeper. The arousal mechanism that should wake them when something goes wrong gets suppressed.

SIGNS OF OVERHEATING MOST PARENTS MISS: Sweaty neck or chest. Not hands. Hands are unreliable. The chest and back of the neck tell the truth.

Flushed red skin on the face or ears. Beyond normal pinkness.

Rapid breathing without other illness signs. The body is trying to cool by breathing faster.

Irritability followed by unusual sleepiness. The progression from fussy to unresponsive is the danger sequence.

Hot to the touch on the chest or belly. If it feels hot to your hand it's too hot for their body.

ROOM TEMPERATURE FOR SLEEP: 18-20°C. This feels cool to adults. Your comfort zone is not your baby's safe zone.

DRESSING RULE: One layer more than what you're comfortable in. You in a t-shirt means baby in a onesie plus a light sleep sack. Not three layers because grandma says they look cold.

NO HATS INDOORS. The head is the primary heat release point. A hat traps heat the body is trying to release.

Check the chest right now. Not the hands. Warm and dry is perfect. Hot or damp means remove a layer immediately.
