That feeling when you’ve been busy and away for a couple of weeks and now you feel like you’ve “got to get back on top of things.”

Sound familiar?

We’ve been away over the last couple of weeks, visiting and exploring three corners of the UK! It’s been so lovely to spend time together, as well as catching up with friends up north and family in Wales. Followed by my birthday and prepping for the village scarecrow competition (I'm not even kidding!)

But... now all that is done, that feeling kicks back in.

The unpacking.
The sorting.
Getting the house straight again.
Getting school stuff sorted ready for the new term.
Getting bedtime back on track!

There should be less to do now we’re not on holiday, but it’s so easy to get stuck in the “got to” trap, where our heads are spinning with everything we think needs doing.

We create mental lists because we believe they’ll help us feel more prepared and more in control.

But all too often, they just create more stress. 🫣

And then come the physical effects...

That panicky/fluttery feeling.
Overwhelm.
Lying awake unable to sleep.
Struggling to focus.
Irritability.

And is all that thinking actually helpful?

Nope.

It doesn’t help us get things done.
It doesn’t give us more control.
And it certainly doesn’t make my house any cleaner or tidier! 😂

Sometimes the useful question isn’t “How do I get on top of everything?”

It’s:

"What actually needs my attention right now?”

I’ve explored this idea much more in my new FREE guide, The Summer Recharge - including how to tell the difference between helpful thinking and thinking that’s simply keeping your head busy.

Anxiety doesn’t have to be ruining your life before you do something about it.

You might be coping perfectly well.

Going to work.
Looking after the kids.
Seeing friends.
Getting everything done.

But you might also be…

Overthinking things that other people seem to let go.

Avoiding situations because they make you uncomfortable.

Looking for reassurance when you’re worried.

Thinking through every possible “what if?”

Struggling to switch your brain off.

Feeling like you should be fine… but not quite feeling it.

Anxiety doesn’t always look like panic attacks or being unable to leave the house.

Sometimes you’re functioning absolutely fine, it’s just taking far more effort than it should.

And you don’t have to wait for it to get worse before you decide you’d like things to be different.

Anxiety is something you can learn to understand, influence and overcome.

And learning those skills before you reach breaking point?

That makes a lot of sense to me.

3 things I had to do as an anxiety specialist to overcome anxiety…

1️⃣ Listen to my thoughts MORE.
Not believe them more. Not overthink them more. Actually listen to what I was telling myself.

Because once I started paying attention, I realised just how often my thoughts were predicting, assuming, catastrophising and looking for what might go wrong.

2️⃣ Accept that thoughts are not facts.
Just because I think something doesn’t make it true.

“I won’t cope.”
“This is going to go badly.”
“Something’s wrong.”

They might feel convincing. That doesn’t make them accurate.

3️⃣ Look for the positives in EVERY situation.
And I really do mean every situation.

Our brains are very good at finding what’s wrong, what could go wrong and what we don’t want.

So I practised looking in the other direction too.

What’s good here? What went well? What could go right?

None of these things meant pretending everything was wonderful.

They taught me something much more useful:

I didn’t have to believe every thought my mind produced. And I had far more influence over where I put my attention than I realised.

That changed everything for me.

“I’ve done therapy in the UK and the US over decades and I’ve never had anything like this!”

I honestly couldn’t ask for a better explanation of why I teach practical skills rather than simply talking about anxiety.

In just 7 weeks, this client changed the way she understood her thoughts, responded to difficult situations and approached life.

But the part she hadn’t expected?

Her children were watching, learning and beginning to pick up those skills too.

That means more to me than I can possibly say 🥰 Thank you so much for your lovely words - they mean the world x

Sometimes the best feedback tells you exactly what makes you different...

A client sent me this recently...

"It never felt like therapy. It felt more like a fun, informative, thought-provoking chat with someone who gets it, doesn't judge or decide for you... more like a guide to a mind-freeing nirvana! (Ok, that sounds maybe a bit far-fetched, but that's truthfully how it was for me, and still is.)"

That sentence made me smile.

Not because of the compliment...

But because it perfectly sums up what I've always hoped people would experience.

When people first contact me, they often worry they'll spend weeks analysing their childhood or endlessly talking about how anxious they feel.

That's not what we do.

Instead, we explore how your mind works.

Why your thoughts have so much influence over your emotions.

Why anxiety isn't something that's simply happening to you.

And, most importantly, the practical skills that allow you to create lasting change.

There's no judgement.

No pressure.

No psycho-babble.

Just straightforward conversations that help everything finally make sense.

Because once you understand what's creating your anxiety...

You can stop feeling at the mercy of it.

💛 Thank you to the wonderful client who gave me permission to share those words.

If you've ever wondered whether support has to feel heavy or intimidating...

It doesn't.

When you notice stress, overwhelm or anxiety building this summer... don't rush to make it disappear.

Instead, get curious.

One of the biggest shifts I ever made was realising that understanding my mind was far more powerful than fighting it.

The next time you notice yourself feeling overwhelmed, try asking yourself these three questions...

➡️ Swipe through.

You might be surprised!

If these questions resonate with you, I've created a free Summer Reset Guide to help you understand why summer sometimes feels harder than it should and how to approach it differently.
