Good care starts with the heart ❤️.

July is Good Care Month, an opportunity to recognise the dedication, compassion and professionalism of people working across social care and to celebrate the difference they make every day. 🥳

Here at Barrowhill Hall, our 74-bedroom residential and nursing home on the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border, good care means taking the time to understand each of our residents as an individual. 🥰

For us it’s about listening to our residents, giving them choices, supporting their independence and helping them to continue doing all the things that brings purpose and enjoyment to their lives. 😊

As a home we specialise in caring for those living with dementia and memory loss and we also have a separate modern household, Churnet Lodge, for those living with Young Onset Dementia. 🏡

“Our philosophy is to care with the heart," says our home manager Dania. "Every act of care begins with a caring heart and I’m so proud of all the dedicated team here who go above and beyond for our residents every single day.” 🙌

We know that good care is found in both the important decisions and the smaller everyday moments. From supporting a resident with their needs and helping them to stay connected with a loved one to simply taking the time to share a cup of tea and a meaningful conversation. ☕️

This Good Care Month, we’re celebrating our whole Barrowhill Hall team and the commitment they bring to our residents. 🎉

We arranged for a vintage car display to visit our home on Father’s day.

Our home’s activities lead, Kerry, said creating meaningful moments for residents and their families is at the heart of life at Barrowhill Hall.

“It’s an honour to organise special moments that our residents and their loved ones can enjoy together on such a special occasion,” she said.

“We’re like one big family here and seeing the love, laughter and memories shared between everyone today has been priceless.”

Clare enjoyed the day with her parents, Frank Telfer, 96 and Jenny Telfer, 95, who are both residents at the home. Frank enjoyed celebrating Father’s Day and said being a dad is ‘amazing” and “incredible”.

Clare said: “We have loved all the beautiful cars and tractors; it’s been very nostalgic. It felt like being on a film set, especially with the idyllic countryside and everyone enjoying the sunshine.

“The best thing about Dad is his twinkly eyes and he’s so kind. The team here are always there for us all.”

Residents at our Staffordshire care home enjoyed a nostalgic Father’s Day celebration.

Our dedicated team arranged for a collection of vintage cars to come to our home, so residents and their families could reminisce and share special memories together.

Residents were able to walk around and sit inside the classic cars, which included a blue Morris Minor, an Austin 16, an MG Magnette and a Morgan alongside two tractors.

Residents and visitors also enjoyed entertainment from a bagpiper, as well as tea and homemade cakes.

Resident Hugh Smalley, 73, spent the day with his daughter Helen.

“I’ve really enjoyed being with my dad today,” Helen said. “I love everything about him! He hired a vintage car for me on my wedding day and seeing these cars today brought back those lovely memories.

“I love coming to visit him here. The home is so friendly and helpful.”

As well as being a celebration, the display provided an opportunity for reminiscence therapy and sensory engagement through handling and discussing familiar objects from the past, which is particularly valuable for residents living with dementia and can allow them to connect with memories that might otherwise be hard to reach.

We celebrated Father’s Day in style with a vintage car display! 🚘

Our event brought back lots of special memories for our residents and their loved ones. 😍

We are Barrowhill Hall, a 74-bedroom residential and nursing home in Rocester, on the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border and we specialise in caring for those living with dementia and memory loss. 🏡

We also have a separate modern household, Churnet Lodge, for those living with Young Onset Dementia.

Our resident Sean, 89, enjoyed the event with his daughter Helen and was particularly excited to sit inside the blue Morris Minor. 🤩

“I used to have a car like this one,” Sean said. “I used to drive a very young Helen around in it. It’s brilliant to be in one with her again. It’s beautiful and wonderful being Helen’s dad.” 🥰

Helen said: “It’s been brilliant to relive such a special memory. Dad is very funny and he loves to sing. We’ve had a lot of laughs today. 😂

“Dad would always come over for dinner on Father’s Day and I’m very grateful to Barrowhill Hall for supporting us to continue marking special occasions together. He’s very happy here.” ❤️

Making our residents smile means everything to us!

Here are just a few things we’ve been getting up to at Barrowhill Hall. 🥰

We’ve had the joy of celebrating some birthdays with our residents, which always involves a delicious homemade birthday cake. 🥳 🎂

Residents have also enjoyed icing their own cakes ahead of an afternoon tea we held in our home’s lounge. 🧁

We’re ready for the World Cup and we’ve been crafting our own football ground! ⚽️

We’ve loved being in the garden when the weather has been warmer (but not too warm!!) and the rain is helping all our vegetables to grow. 🍓

We’ve enjoyed sharing our pub trip stories with you! 🥰

We’re Barrowhill Hall, a 74-bedroom residential and nursing home on the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border and we specialise in caring for those living with dementia and memory loss.🏡

We also have a separate modern household, Churnet Lodge, for those living with Young Onset Dementia.

The pub trip was arranged following a request from the residents and we were only too happy to meet their needs. We arranged this trip with the gentlemen, but we also organised a shopping trip to Uttoxeter for the ladies at their request.

Keeping our residents connecting with the community and making sure they are doing what they love means everything to us!😊

Ruth and Val from the lifestyles team went with the residents to the pub.

“It was a really relaxed afternoon,” Val said: “the gentlemen loved it. For some, it was the perfect chance for them to enjoy a pint and some friendly conversation. For others, who don’t speak much, the change of scenery and the sensory elements - like the smells and sounds of the pub - created a sense of familiarity and comfort.🍺

“Trips like these aren’t about anything grand, they’re about everyday moments that feel normal, social and meaningful."

“We knew we would make this trip happen as soon as the residents asked to go to the pub,” Ruth explained. “It meant a lot to the guys to spend this time together and it gave them an opportunity to bond with each other.🙌

“It was lovely to hear some of their memories of being at the pub and they just loved playing pool and ordering their drinks. We have now been twice and are planning the next trip there so this will now be known as their local!”🥳

Our much-loved Mick Jennings was amongst those who enjoyed the trip and had fun playing darts.❤️

Afterwards he said, “I like to socialise with others, and I used to love going to the pub to watch sports.⚽️

“This trip was a bit different to our usual trips. It was nice to go with the guys and the games were a lot of fun. I had half a pint.”

The afternoon was requested by the gentlemen and we were only to happy to arrange it for them.

Our home manager Dania Meadows said, “Helping to keep our residents happy means everything to us.😍

"These trips are a great opportunity for our residents to get out into the community and socialise.🙌

“There is a perception that your social life ends when you move into a care home, but nothing could be further than the truth.’🥰
