The regular Thursday morning Hillingdon Stroke Support Group session at Tudor Club Over 60’s Lunch and Social Club in Eastcote.
One person brought their son too, pictured here sharing a game of dominoes with another member.
Some people with Aphasia may find speech, numerals and comparing quantities challenging. Playing dominoes requires focus, concentration, comparison and selection according to certain criteria - an excellent therapeutic activity!

Among the members of the public we spoke to at the Carers Trust Hillingdon Carers' Fair yesterday was Madam Mayor, the Hillingdon Mayor Cllr Reeta Chamdal.
On the photo, our volunteer Steve is explaining FAST on the Hillingdon Stroke Support Group banner -
F = Face: is the person's face drooping on one side?
A = Arms: can they raise their arms above their head?
S = Speech: is their speech slurred, or hesitant, or not making sense?
T = Time: call 999 immediately. The FASTer they get medical treatment, the better their chance of recovery.

Yesterday at the Carers Trust Hillingdon Carers' Fair in Uxbridge, we had loyal support from volunteers Ricky, Cath, Steve and Tracey (who isn't pictured).
We even had a visit from other members too - Karamjit, Manjit, Okey and David. Nearby, the stall holders complimented Hillingdon Stroke Support Group on our strong team. It's true!!

Thank you to the The Confederation Hillingdon, CIC for the talk yesterday on Hypertension and Cholesterol. Most members of Hillingdon Stroke Support Group have Aphasia, a difficulty in processing information and in responding or speaking.
The talk was very clear and easy to understand, covering hypertension, cholesterol, diet and exercise - just what we all need to reduce the risk of stroke.

Most of the members of Hillingdon Stroke Support Group have Aphasia, affecting their ability to understand or communicate.
Click the images to read about some kinds of aphasia.
If you meet someone who doesn't quite seem to 'get' what's going on, or who struggles to find the words they need, perhaps they are a stroke survivor.
Give them plenty of time, listen carefully and be patient.

Month
Most members of Hillingdon Stroke Support Group have Aphasia - a difficulty with communication of varying kinds.
One member has told us that they love to go out into nature, because it's quiet and they don't have to listen hard to what people are saying, or try to interpret what the words mean.
This spot by the Thames is ideal for them! There's just birdsong, the breeze and the gentle rain to listen to, with the sounds of children playing in the distance. No words to worry about!

From time to time, Hillingdon Stroke Support Group is asked to speak to patients in hospital who have recently had a stroke or a brain injury.
Last week our Group member Steve went along, with two Stroke Association volunteer Community Connectors. It was perfect timing for Month!
The staff said: "It makes such a positive difference when patients hear directly from those who have been in similar situations... The sense of hope and determination... was incredible... As a clinician, it made me reflect on the powerful message that was coming across... I think it was particularly helpful for families to hear, too. Unlike other medical conditions, there is no 'fix' or return to 'normality' or 'old self, adjustment and acceptance of this seems to be central."
We're always glad to be of help!
