One of the curious things about very dry soil is that it can stop absorbing water altogether! 😯

Instead of soaking in, the water simply runs off the surface or straight through the pot.

Our instinct is often to pour more on, but gardeners know that doesn't usually help.

The answer is gentler.

A little water.

Time.

Then a little more.

Gradually, the soil begins to absorb again.

It made me wonder whether our growth sometimes works like that too. 🤔

When we've been running on empty for a long time, perhaps we don't need everything to change overnight.

Perhaps we don't need rescuing.💚

Perhaps we simply need the time and space to remember how to receive what helps us to grow.🌱😊

I used to think slowing down meant falling behind. 🙄

Now I think it means finally noticing what's been here all along.

Sunlight through leaves.
The sound of a breeze.
Tiny movements we'd normally walk straight past. 😊🌳

It's surprising how much life is happening while we're hurrying somewhere else.

And I'm just not interested in rushing anymore. 🤗

Presence isn't doing less.
It's being here for more.💚🌿😊

At the beginning of August many people mark Lughnasadh (Loo-nah-sah) an ancient Celtic festival celebrating the first harvest and the halfway point between summer and autumn.🍒🌰

Traditionally, it was a time to gather the first grain, pick the first fruits and pause to give thanks for what the land had provided.

I love that rhythm. 😊

Not because we all need to celebrate an ancient festival, but because it reminds us to do something we so rarely make time for. 💚🤔

To stop for a minute.

To notice.

To gather.

We always seem to be focused on what comes next. 🙄

Yet another personal goal, more projects to finish, or another fresh start.

Nature quietly asks a different question.

What are you ready to gather? 🤔

Perhaps it's fruit.

Perhaps it's the confidence you've regained.

A new friendship.

A deeper sense of peace.

Or a new understanding that arrived so gradually you almost missed it. 😊

Before the season begins to turn, perhaps it's worth noticing what this one has already given us, in lots of ways... 💚😊

People occasionally ask me what Herbydaceous actually is. 🌿🤩

I've realised it's quite a difficult question to answer. 😊

When I first started, I thought it was about gardening.

Well... it is, a bit. (cause I do like gardening!).

Then I thought is it about wellbeing?

Again... yes, a bit. (And I definitely like being well!) 😁

But over the last year something unexpected has happened.

The more time I've spent quietly observing the living world, the more I've realised Herbydaceous isn't really about plants at all. 🤔

The plants are where the conversations begin.

Watching dry grass adapt to drought.

Looking up through a tree canopy.

Standing beside a stream.

Following the tide around a piece of seaweed.

Every observation seems to open another conversation about life, change and the seasons we all move through.😊

I've stopped trying to find lessons in nature.

Instead, I'm learning to pay attention.

Perhaps that's what Herbydaceous has become.

A place where we slow down, notice the living world, and discover it's been quietly helping us make sense of ourselves all along.

Thank you for coming on this journey with me. 🥰🌱

There's so much more still to notice.🌿💚

I almost walked straight past this stretch of path. 😮🌿

It was dry after weeks without rain, edged with nettles, blackthorn and patches of ragwort. Not the sort of place that usually stops people in their tracks.

Then I noticed a butterfly.

And another.

And another.

Before long I realised I was surrounded by them.

Not the flashy, familiar garden butterflies that steal all the attention, but Gatekeepers, Meadow Browns, Common Blues, Commas and other species quietly going about their lives in exactly the habitat they need.

It reminded me that nature doesn't measure a place by how impressive it looks. 😊

Life simply asks, "Can I flourish here?"

Sometimes the places we overlook are quietly full of life.💚😎🦋
