09/07/2026

We are deeply saddened to announce that Peter Taberner passed away on Monday, 22nd June 2026, at Pinderfields Hospital, aged 79.

Peter was a devoted husband to Susan and a loving dad to Diane, Peter, and Sandra. He leaves behind six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a large, loving extended family, including his six brothers and one sister.

Peter’s roots always remained in Fitzwilliam and Kinsley. While he was well-known across the community, he also had a special fondness for Scarborough; the family finds comfort in knowing his final day was spent enjoying the sea breeze and sunshine.

A former electrician at South Kirkby Colliery, Peter shifted his focus to community service after health challenges. He took on many roles, to name just a few: he was a school governor at Hemsworth Arts and Community College, a dedicated fundraiser for the Hemsworth Miners Welfare Cricket and Social Clubs, and a founding member of the Fitzwilliam and Kinsley Resource Centre.

He was a lifelong, passionate champion of equality and a proud "True Red," by which we mean a staunch Labour supporter. For those who knew him, there was no confusion with that other "Red" team, Manchester United, whom he famously disliked. He was, of course, a fiercely loyal Leeds United fan through and through. He also loved a cold Budweiser, which we look forward to raising in his honour.
