Meeting Homeopathic Standards Since 1897

Ever notice the letters “HPUS” on your Washington Homeopathic Products remedy?

Those four letters have an important meaning.

HPUS stands for Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States, the official compendium for homeopathic drugs recognized under U.S. federal law.

When you see HPUS associated with an active ingredient, it means that ingredient is recognized in the HPUS and is subject to established standards for its identity, strength, quality, purity, and preparation.

The HPUS has been setting standards for homeopathic medicines in the United States since 1897.

The Man Who Tried to Disprove Homeopathy... and Became One of Its Greatest Champions

Constantine Hering did not exactly set out to become a homeopath.

As a young medical student in Germany in the 1820s, Hering was asked to help write a book criticizing homeopathy. There was just one problem: the more he studied it, the less convinced he became that it deserved to be dismissed.

Then things got even more interesting.

After badly injuring his hand during a dissection, Hering reportedly turned to homeopathic treatment when conventional approaches were not helping. His experience helped change the direction of his life.

Hering went on to become one of the most influential figures in the history of homeopathy. He eventually settled in Philadelphia, helped establish institutions devoted to homeopathic medicine, trained generations of physicians, and spent decades studying and documenting remedies.

Among his most famous contributions was his monumental Guiding Symptoms of Our Materia Medica, a 10-volume work that remains part of homeopathic literature today.

And his life took him well beyond the doctor's office. Hering traveled to South America, studied plants and animals, and conducted one of the earliest homeopathic provings of Lachesis, prepared from the venom of the bushmaster snake.

Not bad for a man who started out trying to prove homeopathy wrong.

Sometimes curiosity has a way of changing the course of a life.
