Who would’ve thought back in March 1990, 36 years and 2 months later she would be finally hanging up her secretary title. We would all like to thank you for your years of service and wish you the absolute best in your retirement x

🚨 Do you know the 4 signs of Type 1 diabetes? 🚨

They are called the 4Ts:
💧 Thirsty – feeling thirsty all the time
🚽 Toilet – needing to wee more often
😴 Tired – feeling very tired
⚖️ Thinner – losing weight without trying

If you or your child have any of these signs, it could be Type 1 diabetes.

If it’s not picked up early, it can be very serious.

Could you help train the healthcare professionals of the future?

Newcastle University School of Medicine trains students who will go on to work in the NHS. Our students include future doctors, physician associates and clinical scientists.

Patients as Partners in Healthcare Education is a service that brings patients and volunteers together with our students. This plays a vital role in helping students learn important skills such as communication, examinations and good bedside manner.

We are looking for patients with lived experience of healthcare or members of the public who would like to volunteer. By sharing your time and experiences, you can help our students grow into kind, skilled and confident healthcare professionals.

If you’re interested in getting involved, we’d love to hear from you.

We understand some people are worried about meningitis B after the recent outbreak in Kent. At present, the NHS is not offering vaccination to those who haven’t previously had it, except for people at higher risk. Meningitis B is rare, but please know the symptoms: fever, headache, vomiting, extreme sleepiness, dislike of bright light, or a rash. If someone seems very unwell, seek medical help immediately.

For more information about Meningitis B. Please visit the NHS website: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/meningitis/

For more information specifically about the outbreak. Please visit UK Health Security Agency’s website: https://ukhsa.blog.gov.uk/2026/03/18/meningitis-b-outbreak-what-you-need-to-know/

🌟 Thinking about a New Year’s resolution that supports your health and wellbeing?

🧘‍♀️ From Wednesday 14th January, Dr Coates will be running an 8-week mindfulness course on Wednesday mornings from 10am–12pm at St Anthony’s Church of Egypt, Belmont Street.

✨ Mindfulness can help people manage a range of health difficulties, including chronic pain, anxiety and depression.

💬 Patients who attended the previous course reported feeling better able to cope with anxiety and low mood.

📋 Before joining the course, everyone is asked to attend a one-to-one mindfulness assessment appointment with Dr Coates.

✅ This essential session offers a chance to talk through your current health concerns and explore together whether this course feels like the right step for you.

📞 If you are registered with our surgery and would like to take part, please contact reception on 0191 219 6100 to book an assessment appointment with Dr Coates on 7th January.

💙 Only Order What You Need 💙

Did you know you can help the NHS by only ordering the medicines you need?

✔️ Check what medicines you still have at home
✔️ Only order what you are running low on
✔️ Say no to medicines you no longer take

Ordering too much medicine can lead to waste and stops others from getting what they need.

If you are not sure what to order, your GP practice or pharmacist can help.

Thank you for helping to look after the NHS and your local services 💙
