How Do I stop My Mind Thinking?

One of the questions I'm asked most often when teaching mindfulness is:

"How do I stop my mind thinking?"

The answer usually brings surprise- and relief.
Many people assume stopping thoughts is the goal.

They also know how impossible that feels.

The simple answer is .....
We don't.

Thinking itself isn't the problem. The problem begins when thinking quietly stops being helpful.

👉 We replay the same conversation twenty times.
👉 We keep searching for answers that simply aren't available.
👉 We continue thinking long after the situation is ended.

Bringing awareness to our thinking, isn’t about emptying our mind. It’s about recognising what the mind is trying to do.

That moment of awareness creates choice.
The choice to go down the rabbit hole one more time.... or the choice to let those thoughts be.

If replaying conversations long after they've ended feels familiar, I've explored why it happens in my latest article.

Many thoughts. One word.

Certainty.

One word completely changed how I understood overthinking.

When we replay conversations, it feels as though we’re trying to work out what happened.

But what if the brain is actually trying to solve a different problem?

What if the brain is actually searching for certainty.

👉 Did they mean that?
👉 Did I say the wrong thing?
👉 Should I have handled it differently?

Because certainty helps the brain to feel safe.

The irony is that life rarely gives us certainty and so the mind’s endless search continues.

And whilst the mind continues searching, the body continues experiencing that uncertainty.

Interested in digging deeper - I've explored this idea in my latest blog.

Ever wondered why we replay the same conversations?

You leave the meeting.
Grab a coffee.
Sit down for a moment’s peace.

Yet somehow, your mind has started the conversation all over again.

👉 You replay what they said.
👉 You replay what you said.
👉 You wonder what they really meant.
👉 You think of all the things you wish you'd said instead.

It feels like problem solving.

But have you ever wondered if your mind is actually trying to solve a completely different problem?

Not the one you’re obsessing over, but something deeper.

Intriguing, I know. I’ve explored this in my latest blog if you’d like to read more.

The Day the Mill Stopped Turning.

It was profound and I don't say that lightly.

The first time my mind became completely still.

It wasn't for minutes

Just seconds.
Perhaps twenty.

But when you've never experienced stillness before.....twenty seconds can change everything.

I remember seeing an image in my mind of a great old watermill.
For the first time in years. it had stopped turning.

I remember feeling both awe and fear.
Not fear of the silence. Fear that my very next thought would start the wheel turning again.

That moment changed the questions I began asking about stress.
Not...
"How do we eliminate stress?"
But...
"Could we learn to interrupt the thoughts that keep stress alive long after the situation has ended?"

That short experience became the foundation of my MSc research.
It eventually led to the development of the Bounce Back Programme.
Because - Stress may visit all of us. It doesn't have to move in.

If you've ever felt like your own mind won't stop turning, I've written more about the science behind it in my latest article.

What a lovely discovery.

Every month as I collect content for the app, I have a look at poetry on the month's theme. September is about self compassion.

Today I came across this lovely peaceful YouTube channel.

It gave me a few moments pause and so much inspiration for my own content. Enjoy.

Sometimes we become so used to being needed that we forget to ask -

what do we need?

Work. Family. Parents. Children. Life. There can come a point when we realise we've spent an enormous amount of time looking after everything and everyone around us — and very little time checking in with ourselves.

The Mindful Living Course is an opportunity to change that.

Over eight weeks, we'll explore mindfulness not simply as something you practise for a few minutes each day, but as a different way of meeting everyday life.

In a small, face-to-face group, we'll combine teaching, guided mindfulness and conversation, with space to slow down, reflect and reconnect with what matters to you.

And the learning doesn't stop when you leave the room. You'll have the course book and app to support a daily practice at home, because mindfulness is something we learn through experience.

Eight weeks. A little space each day. And perhaps the beginning of a different relationship with yourself.

The next course begins Thursday 3rd September at 6.30pm at Hoylake Parade Community Centre.

Most of us think stress ends when the situation ends.

But the mind often has other ideas. So:

The meeting finishes...
The conversation is over...
The email has been sent...

Then the mind quietly goes back to work:
It replays the conversation
Rewrites the email.
Rehearses tomorrow.

Those thoughts don't just replay the experience.

They can also keep our stress response active, making it harder for the nervous system to settle. Those thoughts literally keep our attention anchored to the original event.

That single observation became the starting point for my MSc research into stress and mindfulness and eventually this diagram.

If this resonates with your, I’ve explored the science behind it in my latest blog: 👉 https://www.justbreathesolutions.co.uk/blog/why_stress_lasts_longer_than_it_needs_to

Have you ever noticed that one conversation can stay with you all evening?

Just another ordinary day...

The meeting finishes.
You drive home.
Eat dinner.
Try to relax.

And then...

That conversation starts all over again.

You replay what was said.
You analyse every word.
You think of better answers.
You wonder what tomorrow will bring.

By the time bedtime arrives, you’ve attended the same meeting twenty times over.

The strange thing is...
The meeting ended hours ago.
So why does it feel like you’re reliving it?

It’s far more common than we realise.

If you want to dig a little deeper, I've been exploring what neuroscience tells us about the relationship between our thoughts, our brain and our stress response.

It completely changed the questions I was asking about stress.
