Most care providers already know where the pressure points are.

The challenge is finding the time and capacity to deal with them properly while still running the service every day.

That is often when manageable issues start to become embedded.

A backlog of audits. Actions rolling into next month. Training that needs chasing. Care plans waiting for review. Recruitment pressures. Compliance work competing with day-to-day operations.

None of these problems necessarily starts as a crisis.

But when management teams are already stretched, they can quickly become one.

FCML works directly within services to help providers prioritise what matters, implement improvements and make sure they are sustained, rather than simply adding another action plan to the list.

Sometimes the issue is not knowing what needs to be done.

It is having the time, structure and support to get it done.

FCML can provide the hands-on support needed to implement and sustain meaningful change: https://fulcrumcareconsulting.com/fulcrum-care-management-ltd/

You’ve submitted your CQC registration application. What happens next?

Submitting the application is a major step, but it is not the end of the registration process.

CQC will still need to assess whether the proposed provider, registered manager and service can meet the relevant regulatory requirements. That can involve further questions, requests for supporting information, interviews and, in some cases, a visit to the proposed premises.

Providers therefore need to be ready to explain what sits behind the application, including how quality will be monitored, how risks will be escalated, who holds responsibility for key areas and how governance arrangements will work in practice.

Our latest guide looks at what can happen after submission and how providers can prepare for the next stages of the CQC registration process.

What if the biggest opportunity for technology in care is not the technology itself, but the time it gives back?

Michael Outmezguine explores exactly that in this Pivotal Perspectives conversation, looking at how digital systems can reduce administrative pressure and create more space for meaningful human interaction.

Because every minute saved on unnecessary processes is time that can be spent with residents.

Time to listen.
Time to talk.
Time to provide better care.

The challenge is making sure technology genuinely supports care teams, rather than simply giving them another system to manage.

So, as digital transformation continues across social care, there is a bigger question to consider:

Are we using technology to make care more efficient, or to make more time for care itself?

Planning to register a new care service with CQC?

The application itself is only one part of the process.

Before submitting, providers need to be clear about the regulated activities they intend to carry on, the locations being registered, who will hold leadership responsibility and how governance will work in practice. The Statement of Purpose, policies and supporting documents also need to describe the same service consistently.

There are practical details that can easily be overlooked too. For example, some applicants need the appropriate enhanced DBS check in place before applying, and where a CQC-countersigned check is required, the process can take up to 60 working days.

Our latest guide brings these requirements together and looks at what providers should have in place before they apply, from registered manager arrangements and governance to documentation, policies and final application checks.

What does good governance actually look like when you operate 10, 20 or 50 care services?

It is not about sending more reports to the board.

And it is not about trying to manage every service from head office.

At scale, governance needs to answer something much more important:

Can the organisation identify where risk is developing, understand why and intervene early enough to make a difference?

Our latest article looks at reporting, accountability, escalation and how providers can maintain meaningful oversight as portfolios grow.

Balancing Independence, Choice and Risk in Learning Disability Services

Learning disability providers often face a difficult balance: supporting people to live with greater independence and choice, while also managing risk, safeguarding responsibilities and regulatory expectations.

That can become particularly challenging where people have limited verbal communication, fluctuating capacity, behaviours that may present risk, or need support to make informed decisions about everyday life.

At Fulcrum Complex Care Support, our consultants work with learning disability services to strengthen the systems behind safe, person-centred care. This can include reviewing care planning, Mental Capacity Act decision-making, risk assessments, restrictive practice, staff competence, safeguarding processes and how effectively people are supported to communicate their choices.

We also help providers look beyond documentation to understand whether practice is genuinely promoting independence, community participation and meaningful outcomes for the people they support.

Whether you operate supported living, residential care or home-based services, specialist oversight can help identify gaps early and strengthen both compliance and day-to-day practice.

When Your CQC Rating No Longer Reflects the Care You Deliver

A care service can change significantly in three years.

Leadership can strengthen. Staffing can stabilise. Governance can improve. Historic compliance concerns can be addressed and new systems embedded.

But the CQC rating visible to families, commissioners and prospective residents may still reflect a much earlier point in the service’s journey.

New research commissioned by OpenScore found that 59% of adults would feel uncomfortable choosing a care home rated Requires Improvement, while 52% would feel uncomfortable signing a care contract based on an official rating more than three years old.

For providers, this makes it increasingly important to be able to evidence the quality of the service being delivered now, particularly where an older rating no longer reflects the improvements that have been made.

Our latest article looks at aged CQC ratings, how providers can demonstrate sustained improvement, and the role of governance, independent scrutiny, leadership and workforce stability in building a clear picture of current performance.
