How is lipoedema diagnosed?

Unlike many other conditions, there is currently no single test that can definitively diagnose lipoedema. Therefore, diagnosis is typically made through a detailed medical history, clinical assessment and physical examination performed by a clinician specifically trained in the assessment and diagnosis of the condition ✨

Who can diagnose lipoedema?
🌸 Accredited lymphoedema therapists - these are university-trained healthcare professionals (often physiotherapists or occupational therapists) who have post-graduate training and clinical experience in the assessment, diagnosis and conservative management of lipoedema
🌸 General practitioners (GP) - often the first point of contact for lipoedema-related symptoms, however many GPs are still not familiar with lipoedema and are often not confident formally diagnosing the condition, so you may need to advocate for a referral to a lymphoedema therapist or relevant specialist
🌸 Medical specialists - e.g. specialist plastic surgeons, vascular specialists or rehabilitation physicians with experiencing assessing, diagnosing and managing lipoedema

While virtual consultations can provide helpful education and guidance, an in-person assessment is often more accurate as the clinician can assess tissue texture, swelling patterns, tenderness, skin changes and limb shape directly 🔎

Because lipoedema is often mistaken for other conditions such as lymphoedema or obesity, many people experience delayed diagnosis and years of frustration before getting answers. Early recognition and appropriate management can help improve symptoms, function and quality of life 🌷

Today is World Blood Cancer Day — a day to raise awareness, support those affected by blood cancer, and promote stem cell donations ❤️

Every 27 seconds, someone around the world is diagnosed with a blood cancer such as leukaemia, lymphoma, or multiple myeloma.

For some patients, stem cell transplants are used as part of curative treatment or to extend remission and improve outcomes. Stem cell transplants replace damaged or diseased blood-forming cells with healthy stem cells, allowing the body to rebuild a healthy blood and immune system after high-dose chemotherapy treatment.

FAQ Friday 💡

Q: Is breast, chest wall and/or upper limb swelling normal after breast cancer treatment?

A: Swelling in the breast, chest wall, underarm, and/or arm can occur after breast cancer treatment — particularly following surgery, lymph node removal, and radiation therapy.

However, while some temporary swelling can be expected during initial recovery, ongoing, worsening, or fluctuating swelling is not normal and may be a sign of lymphoedema developing 🔎

Other symptoms can include:
🌸 Heaviness or tightness
🌸 Aching or discomfort
🌸 Reduced movement or flexibility
🌸 Clothing, bras, or jewellery feeling tighter
🌸 Skin changes or firmness

Persistent breast, chest wall and/or upper limb swelling may be common after breast cancer treatment but it is not a normal part of recovery. Early assessment and management can make a significant difference in symptom management and preventing progression.
