To keep an older person hydrated during a heatwave, offer small, frequent sips of cool fluids or water-rich foods like melon and jelly throughout the day. Because sense of thirst declines with age, do not wait for them to ask for a drink.

Practical Drinking Strategies

Sip often:
Provide small cups or easy-to-hold water bottles so large glasses do not feel overwhelming.

Flavor fluids:
Add a splash of diluted squash, fruit juice, or herbal tea if they dislike plain water.

Avoid triggers:
Limit alcohol and strong caffeinated drinks like coffee or heavy black tea, which can increase fluid loss.

Set reminders:
Use phone alarms or leave drinks in plain sight around the room as a visual cue.

Hydrating Foods:
Water-rich snacks: Serve watermelon, cucumber slices, strawberries, tomatoes, or oranges.

Fun treats:
Offer ice lollies, structured jellies (jello), yogurt, or cold blended soups.

Warning Signs to Watch For:
Check urine color: Aim for pale yellow or clear; dark urine means they need fluids right away.

Spot confusion:
Watch for sudden dizziness, unusual sleepiness, dry mouth, or mild confusion, which are key red flags for senior dehydration. If symptoms worsen or confusion sets in, call NHS 111 for immediate guidance.

💧 Dementia and Dehydration – A Hidden Cause of Increased Confusion

One of the most common but often overlooked problems for people living with dementia is dehydration.

Many people with dementia may:
💙 Forget to drink.
💙 Not recognise they’re thirsty.
💙 Find it difficult to hold or use a cup.
💙 Have swallowing difficulties.
💙 Simply lose interest in eating and drinking.

Even mild dehydration can make dementia symptoms much worse, leading to increased confusion, agitation, tiredness, and withdrawal.

⚠️ Watch out for these early signs:
• Increased confusion or agitation.
• Dry mouth and cracked lips.
• Dark urine or not passing urine very often.
• Headaches, dizziness or fatigue.
• Constipation.
• Dry skin.

🚨 Seek urgent medical help if you notice:
• Sudden severe confusion (delirium).
• Very little or no urine.
• Rapid breathing or heartbeat.
• Severe dizziness.
• Reduced consciousness.

💙 Simple ways to encourage drinking

✔ Offer small drinks regularly rather than large glasses.
✔ Sit and have a drink together.
✔ Keep drinks within easy reach and in sight.
✔ Try a favourite mug or a brightly coloured cup.
✔ Ask family, friends and carers to offer drinks throughout the day.
✔ If drinking suddenly becomes difficult, consider whether pain, illness, mouth problems or swallowing difficulties could be the cause.

🥤 It doesn’t have to be just water

Hydration can come from many different drinks and foods, including:
☕ Tea or coffee
🥛 Milk
🧃 Fruit juice or squash
🍫 Hot chocolate
🍲 Soup
🍉 Watermelon
🥒 Cucumber
🍐 Pears
🍦 Ice lollies
🥣 Yoghurt
🍮 Jelly

Some people with dementia even develop a preference for sweeter or stronger flavours, so it’s worth trying different options.

❤️ If they refuse food or drink…

Never force them.

Stay calm, try again later, and if the refusal continues or they seem to struggle with swallowing, seek advice from their GP. They may benefit from an assessment by a speech and language therapist.

🌿 Towards the end of life

As dementia reaches its later stages, it’s normal for people to eat and drink less. At this point, the focus changes from encouraging fluids to providing comfort through small sips, moistening the mouth, and keeping the lips comfortable.

💙 Remember: Dehydration is common in people with dementia, but it can often be prevented. Spotting the early signs and gently encouraging regular drinks can make a real difference to comfort, wellbeing, and to reduce confusion.

Please share—this simple information could help someone care for a loved one living with dementia.

A persistent sore throat, hoarse voice, difficulty swallowing, a lump in the neck, ear pain on one side, persistent cough, breathing changes, unexplained weight loss, pain when swallowing, coughing up blood, or feeling like something is stuck in your throat — these are all signs worth getting checked.

Most of the time, it won’t be cancer. But if something doesn’t feel right, don’t wait for full-time.

Speak to your GP. If in doubt, get checked out.
