Did you know you should start brushing your baby's teeth as soon as their first tooth appears? Looking after baby teeth from the very beginning helps build healthy habits and can prevent tooth decay.

Here are some simple tips from the NHS:

🦷 Start brushing as soon as the first tooth comes through using a soft baby toothbrush.

🦷 Use fluoride toothpaste containing at least 1,000ppm fluoride. Children under 3 years should use a smear of toothpaste. Children aged 3–6 years should use a pea-sized amount.

🦷 Brush twice a day, including last thing before bed.

🦷Encourage your child to spit out the toothpaste, but don't rinse with water afterwards. This helps the fluoride continue protecting their teeth.

🦷 Limit sugary foods and drinks, especially between meals and before bedtime, to help reduce the risk of tooth decay.

🦷 Take your child to the dentist when their first tooth appears, or by their first birthday to help them get used to dental visits.

Could your baby be overheating?

Babies and young children can become unwell more quickly than adults in hot weather, so it's important to know the signs and how to help keep them cool.

Signs your baby may be overheating include:

• Feeling hot to the touch
• Looking flushed or having red skin
• Being unusually sleepy or difficult to wake
• Being irritable or restless
• Breathing faster than normal

To help keep your baby safe in hot weather:

☀️ Keep babies out of direct sunlight, especially between 11am and 3pm.

☀️ Dress them in lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and use a wide-brimmed sun hat when outdoors.

☀️ Offer feeds regularly, as babies may need to feed more often in warm weather.

☀️ Keep sleeping areas cool by closing curtains during the day and opening windows when it's cooler (ensuring they are safe and secure).

☀️ Never leave a baby or child alone in a parked car, even for a few minutes.

☀️ Babies under 6 months should be kept out of direct sunlight wherever possible.

If you're concerned your baby is unwell or showing signs of dehydration or heat exhaustion, seek medical advice promptly.

Starting school is an exciting milestone for children and families. School readiness isn't about knowing the alphabet or being able to count to 100, it's about helping children feel confident, independent and ready to learn.

Here are some simple ways to support your child before they start school:

🍎 Encourage independence: practise putting on coats, shoes and simple items of clothing.

🍎 Support toileting and handwashing: help your child become as independent as possible with using the toilet and washing their hands.

🍎 Practise mealtimes: encourage your child to open lunchboxes, drink from their water bottle and tidy away after eating.

🍎 Talk, read and play together: everyday conversations, reading stories and imaginative play all help develop communication and language skills.

🍎 Build confidence: encourage your child to have a go, make choices and solve simple problems with your support.

🍎 Establish routines: gradually introducing school-day bedtimes and morning routines can help make the transition easier.

Remember, every child develops at their own pace. School readiness looks different for every family, and children don't need to master every skill before their first day.

Longer evenings, holidays and busy days out can all mean bedtime looks a little different during the summer. While it's normal for routines to change, keeping some consistency can help children feel settled and well rested.

Here are a few simple tips:

🌙 Keep a familiar bedtime routine: bath, brushing teeth, a story and cuddles can help signal that it's time for sleep.

🌙 Wind down together: choose calm activities like reading, colouring or listening to quiet music before bed.

🌙 Put screens away before bedtime: the NHS recommends avoiding screens for 30–60 minutes before bed, as they can make it harder for children to settle to sleep.

🌙 Try to keep bedtimes and wake-up times fairly consistent, even during the holidays. It can make returning to school or nursery much easier.

🌙 Remember, every child is different. Some flexibility over the summer is completely normal, so don't worry if things aren't perfect every night.

If you have a baby, always follow safer sleep guidance. Visit The Lullaby Trust for trusted advice on creating a safe sleeping environment for your little one: https://bit.ly/4pqroY8

Supporting breastfeeding beyond maternity leave 🩷

Breastfeeding is recognised within many international human rights frameworks and conventions.
When employers provide supportive policies and environments for employees returning to work, families may be better able to continue breastfeeding for as long as they choose.

Flexible working arrangements, suitable breaks and private spaces can all help parents balance work and family life.

Today is National Play Day!

This year's theme, "Play - here, there, everywhere!", is a reminder that children don't need expensive toys or planned activities to learn and thrive. Play can happen anywhere: at home, in the garden, at the park, on a walk or even while doing everyday jobs together.

Play is one of the most important ways children learn. Through play, children can:

❤️ Develop problem-solving and thinking skills.

❤️ Build speech, language and communication.

❤️ Learn how to share, take turns and build relationships.

❤️ Strengthen coordination and physical skills.

❤️ Grow in confidence, resilience and emotional wellbeing.

For babies, play starts from day one. Talking, singing, making eye contact, reading stories and tummy time all help to support healthy development and build a strong bond with your baby.

You don't need to plan the perfect activity - the time you spend playing, talking and interacting with your child every day makes a real difference.

If you have any questions about your child's play, development or milestones, we are here to support you with advice and guidance as your child grows.

Supporting the planet🌍

Breastfeeding is a natural and low-cost way of feeding babies and young children.

As it requires minimal processing, packaging and transportation, breastfeeding can help reduce industrial carbon emissions and manufacturing waste, contributing to a more sustainable future.

Supporting breastfeeding families is one of many ways we can help build healthier communities while reducing our environmental impact.
