When someone you love is living with dementia, the challenges aren't only practical, they're emotional too.

Many family carers experience stress, grief, guilt, uncertainty, and even loneliness while supporting someone with dementia. These feelings are completely understandable, yet they're often not talked about enough.

Our latest blog explores the emotional impact of caring for someone with dementia, along with practical ways carers can protect their own wellbeing while continuing to provide compassionate support.

If you're caring for a loved one, or you know someone who is, we hope you'll find it helpful.

Have you ever walked into a room and forgotten why you went there? Or struggled to find the right word during a conversation? While it is easy to blame these moments on ageing or "brain fog," the reason might be much simpler: mild dehydration.

Did you know that the brain is made up of around 73% water? As we get older, our body's natural thirst signals can become weaker, meaning many older adults may not realise they need to drink until they are already dehydrated.

Even a small drop in hydration levels can affect:

πŸ’§ Memory and focus – making it harder to recall information and stay engaged.
πŸ’§ Energy levels – causing tiredness and reduced concentration.
πŸ’§ Mood and mental clarity – contributing to irritability, confusion, or feeling β€œfoggy”.

A simple glass of water can make a big difference. Encouraging regular drinks throughout the day is one of the easiest ways to support healthy ageing and overall wellbeing.

At New Age Care, our carers focus on the little details that help people feel their best. From gentle reminders to stay hydrated to preparing refreshing drinks and providing personalised support, we help ensure that everyday health needs are never overlooked.

Because sometimes, the smallest acts of care can make the biggest difference.

If you or a loved one could benefit from support to stay healthy, happy, and independent at home, we are here to help.

79 Years of Marriage... and Two Beautiful Secrets That Never Get Old

What does it take to build a love that lasts a lifetime?

June and Hubert Malicote from Ohio recently celebrated their 100th birthdays and have been happily married for 79 years. After nearly eight decades together, they shared two simple habits they believe have helped keep their marriage strong.

πŸ’š Always kiss before going to sleep.
No matter what happened during the day, they never ended it without a kiss. It became a daily reminder that love is stronger than disagreements.

πŸ’š Take a timeout instead of arguing.
When emotions ran high, they agreed to step away for a while rather than continue a heated discussion. Taking time to reflect helped them return to the conversation with calmer minds and kinder hearts.

Their love story began with a simple smile in church in 1941. That one moment changed both of their lives forever.

Hubert has often said that every time June smiles, life's difficulties seem to disappear.

At New Age Care, we believe that healthy ageing is about more than physical wellbeing. Strong relationships, kindness, patience, and small daily acts of love all contribute to a happier, healthier life.

Sometimes, the simplest habits can make the biggest difference.

❀️ What advice would you give for a long and happy relationship? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Strong, healthy bones are essential for maintaining independence, mobility, and overall wellbeing, especially as we age. Small, daily habits can make a huge difference in keeping your bones strong and reducing the risk of conditions like osteoporosis.

Here are a few practical ways to look after your bone health every day:
Daily Habits for Healthy Bones
β€’ Fuel Up with Calcium: Incorporate calcium-rich foods into your diet, such as leafy greens (kale, spinach), dairy products or fortified plant milks, canned fish with bones (like sardines), and nuts.
β€’ Don't Forget Vitamin D: Calcium needs Vitamin D to absorb properly! Spend a little safe time in natural sunlight each day, and consider foods like egg yolks, oily fish, or a daily supplement during autumn and winter.
β€’ Stay Active with Weight-Bearing Exercises: Activities that carry your body weight - like walking, light gardening, dancing, or resistance exercisesβ€”stimulate bone strength and improve balance. For instance, research shows that doing targeted resistance and weight-bearing exercises just 3 times a week can improve or preserve bone density by 1% to 3% over a year, helping reverse typical age-related bone loss.
β€’ Prioritize Fall Prevention: Keep pathways at home clear, ensure good lighting, and wear supportive footwear to prevent trips and falls.
β€’ Reduce Bone-Draining Habits: Limit smoking and keep alcohol intake within recommended guidelines, as both can weaken bone density over time.

Taking proactive care of your physical health helps ensure you stay active, confident, and comfortable in your own home.

Need extra support with mobility, daily tasks, or specialized care? We’re here to help.

Hiring a private caregiver may seem like a cheaper and simpler option, but it often comes with far more responsibility than many families realise.

When you hire privately, you become the employer. That means you're responsible for paying wages, managing tax and National Insurance, providing contracts, and ensuring everything is done legally. Mistakes can lead to costly fines or legal issues.

Some families consider paying cash to reduce costs, but undeclared payments can be illegal and leave you with little or no protection if something goes wrong.

You could also be liable if the caregiver is injured while working in your home without the appropriate insurance in place.

There is another important consideration, there's no backup. If your caregiver is ill, takes holiday, or leaves unexpectedly, you are responsible for arranging alternative care, often at very short notice.

As care needs change over time, one caregiver may no longer have the skills or availability required, meaning you'll need to recruit and train someone new.

You'll also be responsible for finding the right person, carrying out background checks, managing rotas, and dealing with any concerns or employment issues.

Not all private caregivers are regulated, fully trained, or insured, which can place both your loved one and your family at unnecessary risk.

Choosing a professional care provider removes that burden. At New Age Care, our carers are thoroughly vetted, fully trained, insured, and supported by an experienced team. We also provide reliable cover, ensuring your loved one continues to receive safe, high-quality care whenever it's needed.

Sometimes, the decision isn't just about saving money, it's about protecting the people you love and giving yourself genuine peace of mind.
