And the wild part?

You probably don’t even realise it’s a story anymore.

Something happened when you were younger.

And your mind made sense of it.

I’m not good enough.

People leave.

I have to keep everyone happy.

It’s safer not to speak up.

I need to get things right.

What people think of me matters.

And then you grew up.

But the story came with you.

Now here’s where it gets interesting…

Your brain LOVES evidence that confirms what it already believes.

So if your story is “I’m not good enough”, guess what you notice?

The criticism.

The person who didn’t choose you.

The thing you got wrong.

The woman doing better than you.

Meanwhile, all the evidence that contradicts the story can sit right in front of you unnoticed.

Hello, scotoma. 👋

We don’t see the world completely objectively.

We filter it.

And what we already believe influences what gets our attention.

So the story gathers evidence.

The evidence strengthens the story.

And eventually you stop experiencing it as a story at all.

It just feels like who you are.

But imagine what happens when you stop asking:

“How do I cope better with this version of me?”

And start questioning the story itself.

What if I’m not the woman who has to keep everyone happy?

What if I don’t need everyone’s approval?

What if getting something wrong doesn’t actually say anything about me?

What if I don’t have to stay small just because that once felt safer?

Because you don’t have to spend the rest of your life gathering evidence for conclusions your younger mind made with limited information.

You get to tell a new story.

And then you start living in a way that gives your brain the evidence to believe it.

This is something I see ALL the time.

We think we’re reacting to what someone did or said.

But there’s often an entire layer in between:

What happened → what my brain decided it meant → how I responded.

And most of that happens so quickly we don’t even notice the middle bit.

That’s why I’m far less interested in teaching someone how to manage a trigger once it’s happening.

I want to know why the brain thinks there’s something there to respond to in the first place.

Because when that information changes, the response can change too.

You don’t need to spend your life getting better at managing the same reactions.

Untriggerable isn’t about letting people walk all over you, staying silent, or never feeling pi**ed off again. It’s about creating space between the trigger and not automatically reacting in the way your brain predicts.

I used to hear that “life responds to us” all the time but didn’t quite understand what that meant.
But when I look at it from a brain based view then it makes sense to me.
Our beliefs form when we are tiny and our beliefs, combined with past experiences create our thoughts.
Our thoughts are designed to get us to take action and here’s the biggest thing- our mind is a prediction machine, it’s constantly predicting what will happen based on our beliefs and prior experiences.
HOWEVER, prediction is not truth. It’s not what is actually going on in the here and now.
Look at this word C-T.
I bet your mind predicted that word was CAT.
So let’s look at it in a life scenario .
You text your mum, she doesn’t respond.
Your mind then starts making up stories (these are not true) like “she doesn’t want to speak to me” She’s upset with me” “ I must have done something wrong”
These are all meanings that your mind automatically attaches to a thought.
So what actually happened was, you text your mum. The inner turmoil came from the made up meanings that your mind had created and it made them up based on your beliefs and prior experiences.
When we stop and get curious and ask- what is actually true in this moment it gives us space and awareness to actually see the truth of a situation and if necessary choose a more helpful perspective and/or belief
So when people say life responds to us, it is responding based on our beliefs, thoughts and behaviours.
The good news is they can be changed so that life responding to us is actually a good thing because we are creating the life we actually desire.

“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind” because as your mind changes your life changes

When you create better beliefs you have better thoughts

When you have better thoughts they lead to better behaviour and actions

Everything and everyone responds to how we are in the world

That’s how we create the life we desire

Change the belief and everything changes

Everything begins in the mind

A different way of being requires a different way of thinking.

And this is something I notice all the time in my work.

Very often, a client comes to me wanting help with one thing , anxiety, overthinking, confidence, people pleasing, a behaviour they can’t seem to change.

But quite quickly, I can often hear that what they’re describing isn’t actually where the problem begins.

It’s the speaker.

Not the source.

One of my strengths as a therapist is being able to read between the lines. I notice the sentence that gets brushed over. The pattern that keeps appearing. The seemingly unrelated thing that suddenly makes everything else make sense.

Sometimes I spot it in the first conversation.

That doesn’t mean we immediately go digging into it. We might work together for several sessions before it becomes relevant.

But it gives us somewhere very different to look.

Because trying to change the symptom without understanding what’s driving it can be like standing at the speaker, desperately pressing buttons trying to change the song…

when the music is actually being controlled by the phone.

Change what’s happening at the source, and you don’t have to keep fighting with the speaker.

I’ve just got back from a lovely few days in Italy to see my daughter

Whilst at the airport yesterday waiting to return home our flight was delayed and they put us all in what could be described as a holding pen of sorts.

There was a guy stood behind me moaning about how wrong it was that we were being made to wait, they shouldn’t be holding us here blah blah blah.

Whilst I was stood there thinking about the wonderful time I had had with my daughter, how lucky I am that I got to fly out at such short notice, how grateful I am that I get to fly, how I was looking forward to seeing my husband who had been working hard at home to provide for us all. I was in a state of gratitude.

You see I know that the more things I purposely seek to be grateful for or where I look for evidence that I’m winning, it causes my brain to seek more experiences for me to be grateful for.

Imagine walking across the same field day after day. That path is going to be well worn, however if you start taking a new path then the old path is going to fade and eventually die off.
This isn’t toxic positivity, pretending everything’s fine when you’re feeling bad.
This is how new neural pathways are created.
Your brain is constantly changing and creating these new pathways based on what you’re paying attention to.
When you focus on where you’re winning (even the smallest of wins), you’re repeatedly firing certain neural circuits and the more often you fire them the stronger and more automatic they become.
Meanwhile the old pathways that get used less and less start to weaken and eventually die off.

So you’re not pretending everything’s is perfect, you’re actually training your brain through repetition to look for evidence to support the neural pathway of where you’re winning.

What is one small way in which you’re winning today?

The past can feel painful because we judge it using information that wasn’t available to us at the time.
The thought that it should have been different causes your mind to try and get you to go back and make it have happened in a different way.
Unless you have a Time Machine, that’s not possible.
So energy being directed is useless, and creates a feeling of hopelessness.

A conversation with a friend who is a counsellor led me to dive into somatic healing.
We were discussing that her as a counsellor and me as a therapist that works with the subconscious, there’s only so much we can facilitate transformation within our clients because yes we can make a massive difference within people’s minds but what about Traina that still exists within our cells?

There has been so much research done about how Trauma stays in the body and also generational trauma up to 6 generations 🤯

So it makes perfect sense to treat the body as well as the mind doesn’t it.

I’ll be sharing more about how you can release the Trauma within your body and I am using it with clients to truly provide a holistic approach to healing.

You may not even consciously think that you have a belief that you don’t feel good enough but it can show up in many ways.
You hesitate to speak up even when you know what you’re talking about.
You say yes when you want to say no because you don’t want to let anyone down.
You apologise when you haven’t done anything.
You over give to the point of exhaustion.
You shrink yourself, you lower your expectations and goals etc

If you didn’t have the belief that you weren’t good enough then none of the above would even occur to you to do.

If you are ready to “feel” as good internally as the external appears then drop me a message to see how we can work together.
