Young people at Washington Mind

Young people at Washington Mind Washington Mind is a local independent charity offering a range of mental health and wellbeing services and training to respond to the needs of local people.

We are Washington Mind's Young People's Project, a free counselling service providing youth-led projects and support for 11-25 year olds and in Washington, Sunderland, Hetton and Houghton. We do our best to ensure that the services are provided in a way that makes people feel comfortable and accepted in a non-judgemental and supportive environment. The young people’s project is a service aimed at

young people aged 16 – 25, living in Sunderland, Washington and the Coalfields. Our aim is to provide a range of services to promote the mental health and wellbeing of the young people in our communities. Some of the services we provide for young people include counselling, group support, training, workshops and work within the community. At Washington Mind, we believe that every young person has the ability to make the right choices and live a meaningful and fulfilling life.

“Tough times are sent to try us”, “life is a rollercoaster” and “you have to take the rough with the smooth” are all things you may have heard people say from time to time. Life definitely does have its challenges and some people are more able to cope with them than others. Your teenage years may be particularly challenging as you are growing and changing rapidly and may have to cope with new and unfamiliar situations. You may find yourself under the stress of exams, leaving school, starting college, university or work, relationship problems or changes within in the family, for example. Common problems can include anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, anger and stress. Sometimes it can be difficult to talk to your parents or friends, but keeping your problems bottled up can make them more difficult to cope with. Talking definitely does help so if you feel you would like some support with any of the problems mentioned or you have any other concerns for your emotional wellbeing, please do not hesitate to contact Washington Mind on 0191 417 80 43

💙 Did you know that Washington Mind Young People’s Project provides one-to-one counselling for young people aged 11+, in safe and welcoming spaces across Washington and Sunderland, including The Life House, PopRecs, schools, and other local venues where young people feel at ease.

They know reaching out can feel like a big step, so their friendly team is always happy to chat first with parents, carers, or professionals. Together, they explore whether the service is the right fit and, if not, help you find the right support.

First sessions focus on getting to know each young person, understanding their needs, and agreeing next steps, with parents or carers welcome to attend.

Young People’s Voices Needed📢

Together for Children are working with the ICB, Bright Futures CIC and the Young Commissioners to understand the barriers young people face when accessing employment and training opportunities. They want to hear from young people aged 16–25, particularly those with SEND, who are currently NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) or who have recently moved into employment or training.

🗓 Saturday 21st March
📍 Betsy Jenny Counselling and Wellbeing Cafe C.I.C

This will be a relaxed and informal event where young people can share their experiences and views. Food and soft drinks will be provided, young people who attend will receive a £10 gift voucher, and parents, carers or support workers are welcome to come along. There is no pressure to speak in a group, and young people can share as much or as little as they feel comfortable with.

If you can’t attend, young people can also share their views through this short questionnaire (you don’t need to have SEND to take part):
