✨ Myths about postnatal doulas ✨

There are a few misconceptions about postnatal doulas that I often hear and I can easily see where they come from.

You don’t need to be struggling to deserve support. Postnatal doula care isn’t only for difficult moments; it can also hold the tender, joyful, overwhelming, and everyday parts of early parenthood.

Postnatal support isn’t a luxury for celebrity first-time parents. It's something that has happened throughout history and across culture.

Postnatal doulas don't only work with families who are breastfeeding and they carry out a very different role to a nanny.

It’s about care during a huge life transition, usually the first 40 days after birth. However it looks for each family, no one should feel like they have to navigate it alone. 🤍

There are so many misconceptions about what a birth doula does, so here’s a gentle reminder… 🤍

A doula isn’t there to take over your birth or replace your birth partner. We do not carry out any medical checks and we do not arrive on broomsticks.

We’re there to support you both, emotionally, physically, and practically, so you can feel calm, informed, and connected throughout your journey to meet your baby.

Doula support isn’t only for one type of birth either. Whether you’re planning a home birth, hospital birth, induction or cesarean, you deserve to feel supported and cared for by a doula chosen by you.

And while doulas don’t provide medical care, we can offer reassurance, continuity, encouragement, and a steady presence during such a transformative time.

Every family deserves to feel held, heard, and supported as they step into parenthood. ✨

“We want a postnatal doula so we can enjoy this time, not just survive it.” Zak 🤍

The early postpartum days are tender, beautiful, exhausting, life-changing, and often overwhelming all at once. Families deserve more than survival mode.

They deserve support.
They deserve rest.
They deserve space and time to soak in the tiny moments because this chapter goes by so quickly

A postnatal doula isn’t about “doing it for you.”
It’s about making sure you are held too.

Studies have shown that postnatal doula support is associated with:
✨ lower maternal anxiety
✨ improved breastfeeding initiation
✨ increased parental confidence and emotional wellbeing

One systematic review published in *JAMA Network Open* found that doula care was most consistently linked with improved maternal mental health and breastfeeding outcomes. Other research has shown that continuous postpartum support helps mothers feel more competent, supported, and emotionally held during the fourth trimester.

Because parents were never meant to do this alone.

A postnatal doula is not a luxury for “struggling” families.
Support is what allows families to rest, recover, bond, and actually experience the newborn days instead of being exhausted and anxious in survival mode.

The goal shouldn’t just get by.
It should be nourishment, connection, and care for the whole family. ✨

I've been spending the last year growing, birthing and loving our third baby. This baby, our last, has taught me so much and now I'm looking forward to getting back into supporting other families on their parenting journey's.

If you are looking to do a hypnobirthing course, a birth planning session or a postnatal doula I would love to hear from you.
