You made the decision.

But the doubt is still there.

So you tell someone about it.

And then you ask:

"Do you think I did the right thing?"

Maybe it's a relationship decision.
Maybe it's a conversation you had.
Maybe it's a career move.

For a moment, hearing reassurance can feel comforting.

The uncertainty settles.

The tension eases.

But often the relief doesn't last.

Because the difficulty was never only about making the decision.

It was about trusting it.

Anxiety can create the feeling that confidence should come from outside of us.

That someone else needs to confirm we are okay.

That we chose correctly.

The decision may not be the problem.

Sometimes the uncertainty that follows it is.

The message has been sent.

The interview is over.

The conversation has happened.

Now all that's left is to wait.

And sometimes that waiting feels harder than the event itself.

Maybe it's a text back.
Maybe it's a difficult conversation.
Maybe it's an interview result.

Anxiety often struggles less with outcomes than with uncertainty.

When there is no answer yet, the mind tries to fill the gap.

It predicts.
Analyses.
Imagines possibilities.

Not because it enjoys doing so.

Because uncertainty can feel deeply uncomfortable.

The answer may not have arrived.

But your mind is already trying to solve it.

Waiting can feel harder than the answer itself.

Because waiting means living with the unknown.

You've already finished.

But something doesn't feel finished.

So you check again.

The message.
The document.
The conversation you had earlier.

Maybe it's a text.
Maybe it's a conversation.
Maybe it's a work project.

Often, the goal isn't perfection.

It's protection.

The mind is trying to prevent future criticism, embarrassment, or problems.

It wants reassurance that nothing has been missed.

That everything is okay.

The challenge is that certainty is difficult to achieve.

No matter how carefully you check, there is always the possibility that something could still go wrong.

So the urge to check returns.

Finished does not always feel finished.

Especially when anxiety is looking for guarantees.

"What do you think?"

"I don't mind."

"You choose."

Sometimes these responses are simply flexibility.

But sometimes something else is happening.

Maybe it's where to eat.
Maybe it's weekend plans.
Maybe it's a career decision.

Making a decision means accepting uncertainty.

You cannot know exactly how things will turn out.

You cannot guarantee you'll make the perfect choice.

For someone experiencing anxiety, that uncertainty can feel uncomfortable.

So letting someone else decide can bring a sense of relief.

The difficulty is that the relief may often come from avoiding the uncertainty, not resolving it.

Avoiding the decision also avoids the uncertainty.

At least for a while.

You take responsibility.

You help.
You organise.
You make sure everything gets done.

People may even see you as dependable.

But sometimes there is more happening beneath the surface.

Maybe it's your relationship.
Maybe it's your family.
Maybe it's your team at work.

Anxiety often worries about what could go wrong.

And one way of responding to that fear is to try to prevent every possible problem before it happens.

So you take on more.

More responsibility.
More tasks.
More pressure.

Not necessarily because you want to.

Because it feels safer than leaving things uncertain.

Responsibility can be a strength.

But sometimes it also becomes a coping strategy.

A way of trying to manage uncertainty before it arrives.

A plan changes.

Someone cancels.
A meeting moves.
The day no longer looks the way you expected.

For some people, it's a minor inconvenience.

For others, it feels much bigger.

Maybe it's a cancelled date.
Maybe it's a change with friends.
Maybe it's a last-minute meeting.

When anxiety is present, predictability can start to feel like protection.

Knowing what will happen creates a sense of stability.

So when plans change unexpectedly, it's not just the plan that disappears.

The feeling of certainty disappears too.

That can make even small changes feel surprisingly difficult.

Predictability can feel like safety.

And uncertainty can feel much louder than it appears from the outside.

You already know the plan.

But you check again.

The time.
The location.
The details.

And then, a little later, you check once more.

Maybe it's dinner plans.
Maybe it's a family event.
Maybe it's tomorrow's schedule.

From the outside, it can look like being organised.

But anxiety can make checking feel less about remembering and more about feeling certain.

The mind isn't always looking for information.

It's looking for relief.

A brief sense that nothing has been missed and everything is under control.

The difficulty is that certainty doesn't tend to last.

So the urge to check returns.

Again and again.

Checking is not always about memory.

Sometimes it's about trying to feel safe in the face of uncertainty.

"I'll do it when I feel ready."

At first, that sounds sensible.

But sometimes readiness becomes the thing you're waiting for.

Maybe it's a difficult conversation.
Maybe it's asking someone out.
Maybe it's applying for a job.

The mind starts looking for a feeling of certainty before taking action.

A sign that the timing is right.
That the risk is gone.
That nothing will go wrong.

But anxiety has a way of moving the goalposts.

The feeling of readiness stays just out of reach.

So the waiting continues.

Days become weeks.
Weeks become months.

And what looks like preparation from the outside can sometimes be a search for reassurance.

Sometimes readiness becomes the delay.

You ask one person.
Then another.
Then someone else.

Not because you don't have an opinion.

Because you want to be sure.

For a moment, hearing another perspective feels helpful.

It brings relief.

But then the doubt returns.

So you ask again.

Anxiety often treats certainty as something that can be borrowed from other people.

If enough people agree, maybe the uncertainty will disappear.

But certainty rarely works that way.

The relief tends to be temporary.
And the search for reassurance continues.

One more opinion rarely solves uncertainty.

It usually just postpones it.
