There is something beautifully simple, and remarkably difficult, in this idea.

We can watch a sunset without needing to improve it. We don't ask it to become brighter, softer or more convenient. We allow it to unfold as it is.

And yet with people, the pull to change, correct, advise or move them towards where we think they should be can be much harder to resist.

Perhaps part of the challenge of the person-centred approach is noticing that pull in ourselves, and asking what becomes possible when we genuinely allow another person to be.

THE WORLD WILL SOUND A LITTLE QUIETER WITHOUT YOU

Some people leave the world.

And some people leave a little of themselves in everyone who ever heard them.

Dolly Parton was one of those people.

She arrived from the mountains with a guitar, a big dream and a heart that seemed determined to make room for everybody.

She sang about heartbreak.
She sang about hard work.
She sang about poverty, love, longing and dreams.

But perhaps her greatest song was the life she lived between the notes.

She never forgot where she came from.
She never seemed too famous to be kind.
And somehow, beneath all those rhinestones and that unmistakable voice, there was always something wonderfully human about her.

Today, somewhere beyond this life, I like to imagine the welcome waiting for her.

Perhaps Carl is there.

Perhaps there is music.

Perhaps there are no more goodbyes.

And perhaps someone has already handed her a guitar.

Rest peacefully, Dolly.

Thank you for the songs.
Thank you for the laughter.
Thank you for the kindness.

And thank you for reminding generations of us that you can come from very little...

and still leave the world with so much.

The world will miss you, Dolly.

But your voice?

That was never going anywhere. 🤍
