With school prom season now just around the corner we here at John Drage Funeral Directors are excited to be able to offer our fleet of Mercedes Limousines to the school leavers of Wellingborough and surrounding areas.

This is the first year we have offered this and we are genuinely so excited to be able to give something back to a community that has supported us so well over the years.

In order to qualify for a chance to win the use of one of our limousines all we ask is that you like this post, follow our page and leave a comment with the date, time and location of your prom.

Use of our vehicles will come at no cost to the family and will be completely FREE.

This offer will run until Thursday 25th June with the winners being announced on Friday 26th June.

Good Luck!

Whilst not commonplace today the use of a cane by funeral directors is a centuries old tradition steeped in history with both practical uses and symbolic meanings.

The funeral director will page (slowly walk) the hearse and funeral cortege away from the funeral home, on approach to and away from a house address or place of worship and then finally into the grounds of the crematorium or cemetery.

During the Victorian era hearses were horse-drawn and funeral directors would use their cane as a way of clearing a path whilst also signalling their movements to both members of the public and the carriage master.

The cane was also used to demonstrate the funeral directors stature as the leader of the procession and would highlight him or her as the point of authority for the funeral proceedings.

By paging with a cane funeral directors are able to control the pace a funeral cortege moves at with greater ease, for example the ferrule (bottom of the cane) may only come into contact on every 4 count or every second strike of a certain foot.

Symbolically it was and to this day still is used as a mark of respect.

Whilst many of the practical uses have faded over the years some funeral directors still use one in a bid to maintain tradition.

The Croyland Chapel

Did you know that at John Drage Funeral Directors we have our very own chapel?!

This chapel can be used by families who perhaps want to remember a loved one in a less formal setting or would prefer the flexibility saying 'goodbye' in The Croyland chapel affords them.

If you are interested in using our chapel then please speak to Carol or Sam in branch, they will happily help, advise and, should you wish show you around.

Yesterday our Funeral Director Scott was joined by Alan, Ash, Connor and Ken as they helped a family say goodbye to a much loved lady.

The service took place in the stunning St Mary's Church, Finedon and was immediately followed by a short committal service at Nene Valley Crematorium.

Floral tributes were provided by the wonderful team at Petal Cascade Florist and were left in the Church grounds for family, friends and neighbours to enjoy following the service.

Last month we experienced an incident where a group of school aged children decided to stand on a footbridge and throw stones/rocks at passing vehicles including our Hearse.

This incident damaged our vehicle as it made it's way to the crematorium for a funeral.

We have, in recent weeks also experienced an increasing number of road users who are either unware of how to negotiate a funeral cortege or simply just ignore tradition and etiquette.

With the above in mind please do consider following these tips moving forward.

We of course appreciate the fact we move slower than other road users but we implore you to please show some empathy and understanding as we es**rt families and their loved ones on what will be their final journey.

Earlier this week our Funeral Director Scott was in attendance at the stunning St Mary Magdalene Church in Geddington as he helped a family inter the ashes of their much loved Daughter.

Victoria of Phillips Funeral Service in Corby made the arrangements and, as always she did a wondeful job in ensuring that the 'little things' were taken care of.

This Thursday we will be hosting an open day here at John Drage Funeral Directors.

Our Funeral Home will be open between 10:00 and 14:00 during which time we invite members of our local community to pop in for a cuppa, a chat and, should you wish a tour too.

The open day is designed to give people the opportunity to dispell any myths they may have with regards to funerals, to discuss funeral plans, tour our facilities and to meet with one of our fantastic local celebrants.

We hope to see you in attendance.

Scott, Sam and Carol.
