🧠 Understanding Dementia: Signs to Look Out For

Dementia is not a single disease. It is a group of symptoms caused by conditions that affect the brain, impacting memory, thinking, communication, behaviour, and sometimes physical abilities.

While memory loss is often the most recognised symptom, there are other early signs that people may overlook.

⚠️ Early warning signs may include:

• Difficulty with balance, walking, or using stairs
• Changes in walking style, such as shuffling or dragging feet
• Confusion about time, place, or familiar surroundings
• Difficulty finding the right words or following conversations
• Problems making decisions or solving everyday tasks
• Changes in mood, behaviour, or motivation
• Struggling with familiar activities such as shopping or managing finances

Dementia can also affect how a person understands space and movement, increasing the risk of trips and falls.

🏠 Supporting safety at home:

• Keep walkways and floors clear of hazards
• Ensure good lighting throughout the home
• Encourage regular strength and balance activities where appropriate
• Seek advice if mobility or memory concerns develop

If you notice several of these signs in yourself or a loved one, speak with your GP. Early assessment and support can make a significant difference.

💙 Awareness matters. Recognising the signs early can help people access the support they need sooner.

💙 Monday Motivation

Sometimes the most meaningful support is simply being there.

A friendly conversation, a shared activity, or a regular wellbeing check can help someone feel connected, valued, and supported. Small moments of companionship can make a lasting difference to a person's confidence, wellbeing, and quality of life.

At CARE ON CALL HEALTH CARE LTD, we believe that everyone deserves connection, dignity, and the reassurance of knowing someone cares.

As we begin a new week, let's remember that kindness, compassion, and human connection can brighten someone's day more than we realise.

💛 Wishing everyone a positive, healthy, and connected week ahead.

📍 Supporting people across Stevenage, Knebworth, Hitchin, Letchworth Garden City, Codicote, Kimpton, Whitwell and surrounding Hertfordshire communities.

☀️ HOT WEATHER CAN BE MORE DANGEROUS THAN PEOPLE REALISE ☀️

For someone living with dementia, a heatwave is not just uncomfortable — it can quickly become dangerous.

A person may:

forget to drink water
not recognise they are overheating
become more confused or distressed
wear heavy clothing in hot weather
struggle to explain that they feel unwell

Sometimes the first sign is simply:
“they don’t seem themselves today.”

As temperatures rise across Hertfordshire, now is the time to check in on older relatives, neighbours, and vulnerable people living alone.

💧 Offer regular drinks
🪟 Keep rooms cool and curtains closed
👕 Encourage light clothing
🚶 Avoid going out during the hottest hours
❤️ Watch for confusion, dizziness, tiredness, headaches, or unusual behaviour

A 5-minute visit.
A glass of water.
A simple phone call.

These small acts can genuinely save lives.

At CARE ON CALL HEALTH CARE LTD, we believe good care starts with compassion, prevention, dignity, and community awareness — not just when there is a crisis.

Please check on someone today.

She might not remember what day it is.
She might forget names… or what she had for breakfast.

But in this moment — she’s laughing.
She’s involved.
She feels like herself.

Peeling fruit together isn’t just a task.
It’s familiarity.
It’s dignity.
It’s connection.

Dementia doesn’t take everything.
It changes how the world is experienced — but moments like this still matter.

Sometimes we focus so much on memory…
we forget that feeling is still there.

And feeling safe, included, and valued?
That stays.

🧠 If you support someone with dementia:
Slow down. Sit with them. Involve them. Share the moment.

Because they may not remember what you did…
but they will feel how you made them feel.

Sometimes, the quietest moments speak the loudest.

Sitting on a bench, surrounded by nature, she reminds us that behind every diagnosis is a person with memories, love, and stories that matter. 💛

Sometimes, the quietest moments speak the loudest. 💛

Sitting on a bench, surrounded by nature, she reminds us that behind every diagnosis is a person with memories, love, and stories that matter.

Dementia doesn’t erase a life; it changes the way we experience it. It can make everyday tasks harder, but moments of connection — a gentle touch, a shared laugh, or playing a favorite song — still shine through.

💡 Here’s how we can make a difference:
• Be patient and present with loved ones
• Encourage gentle activities they enjoy
• Keep social connections alive
• Celebrate the small victories each day

Every act of kindness matters. Every smile counts. Let’s make sure those living with dementia feel seen, valued, and loved. 💙

Share a story, a memory, or a tip that’s helped someone you know. Together, we can turn awareness into action.
