Preston Birth Centre Midwife Led Birth Centre Preston Birth Centre is a Midwife led birth centre at Royal Preston Hospital.

We offer a calm, safe, home from home environment for your labour and the birth of your baby. The birth centre has four beautiful ensuite birth rooms, all have birth pools, mood lighting, music and equipment to support a relaxing labour and birth. We have two ensuite postnatal rooms where you can stay for 24hours and be supported with caring for your baby. The birth centre has a small team of Mid

wives, Maternity Support Workers and Student Midwives who will provide one to one care during labour and support in the postnatal period. We promote normality and offer: immediate skin to skin, physiological third stage, delayed cord clamping, early initiation of breastfeeding, postnatal support and advice. The staff are all trained in dealing with emergencies should they arise. Preston Birth Centre is an alongside birth centre so transfers can be facillated promptly should they be needed.

Using a Birthing Comb for Pain Relief in Labour

What is a birthing comb?
A birthing comb is a simple tool that may help some women cope with pain during labour. It is usually an ordinary plastic hair comb held in the hand during contractions, with the teeth pressing gently into the palm.

How might it help?
Some people find that using a comb during contractions can support pain management in the following ways:

Distraction
Holding and squeezing the comb can provide something to focus on during contractions, which may help take attention away from the intensity of labour pain.

Pressure in the hand
The teeth of the comb press into the palm, creating a strong sensation. This may help to reduce how pain is felt by increasing other sensory input.

Gate control theory
This is a well-established theory of pain, suggesting that non-painful stimuli (such as pressure) can reduce the perception of pain by limiting pain signals sent to the brain.

How to use a birthing comb
If you would like to try using a birthing comb:

Hold the comb with the teeth facing into your palm

When a contraction begins, grip it firmly

Adjust how tightly you squeeze depending on what feels helpful

You can use it alongside other techniques such as:
-Breathing and relaxation
-Movement and positioning
-Massage or water immersion

There is no “right” way—use it in a way that feels comfortable for you.
