TMJ Therapy uses specialised massage techniques in order to release tension and restriction in and around the jaw. Treatment is also focused around the neck and shoulder muscles, which are often a cause of referred pain into the jaw. Many clients suffering from TMJ will complain of having tension in the neck and shoulders; often releasing this tension can go some way to resolving the condition.👍

How Myofascial Release Differs from Massage❗
Quite often, when clients visit for the first time, they will usually explain how they have heard of fascia and myofascial release....but don't really have any idea how the treatment is performed!
Some will expect a form of deep tissue massage, where the therapist uses deep pressure to iron out 'knots' or stretch out 'tight' muscles.
What actually happens in a myofascial release session is quite different to what a massage session normally looks like. The treatment is performed on dry skin - there are no oils or creams applied - and the therapy can also be performed over clothing.
During the session, the therapist will first identify areas of tension which may be causing some of your pain. They will then use their hands to gently stretch the tissues until they feel a restriction; once the restriction has been identified the the therapist will then wait at the restriction to feel for tissue change. Once changes begin to occur in the tissues the therapist will then follow these releases until tension has reduced. .
The intention of myofascial release is to let the body guide us in what it wants to do, rather than us, as therapists, attempting to force our intentions on the body.

By allowing the body to decide and accept changes within the tissues - rather than forcing our own agenda's on the body - the client will usually experience longer lasting reduction on their level of pain as well as less pain and discomfort during their session!

Scar Therapy and effects on the body.
Scar therapy is a light touch, gentle therapy used for the release of tension in scars. During a scar therapy treatment, the therapist will assess the area of the scar but will also look at other areas such as posture and walking gait. If a scar is present in the body then this can also potentially affect other areas of the body. Have you got a hip scar which may be causing back or knee pain? A scar to the foot which may affect the alignment of the toes, causing problems with how you foot mechanics work and creating knee or hip pain as a result? Even with mature scars, decades old, it's possible for changes to be made which can result in reduced pain and more freedom of movement.

More pressure does not always mean better results...
I'm often asked how by clients how I am able to make a difference with their pain complaints whilst only using lighter pressures. The answer is we a re trying to work with the body and its nervous system to allow the body to heal itself. When working with clients who are in pain, if too much force or pressure is applied, then this can cause the nervous system to go into a guard response, which usually results in the affected tissues going into a protective spasm. This can sometimes result in pain following treatment and potentially little in the way of improvement. By working gently and mindfully we are helping to make the body aware of the painful area without overstressing it and therefore preventing the muscle spasm and guarding response. This enables the body to understand it is safe to move more freely, without the need to overprotect the area. This, in turn, often results in a softening in the affected tissues and a longer lasting reduction in pain. Using myofascial techniques can often help with pain conditions when other interventions have not helped.

Scars, whether caused through injury, accident or surgery, have the potential to create ongoing pain and dysfunction. Adhesions in the connective tissues below the skin can create tension and restriction in the tissues around the scar. This can often result in pain in other areas of the body. A hip scar can contribute to back pain, a neck scar can result in shoulder pain. as a qualified scar worker, therapist Jeff Pringle is able to assess the area of the scar and apply specialist scar massage techniques designed to release tension both within the scar and restrictions elsewhere.

Although the main complaint often associated with TMJ is a clicking or grinding sensation the jaw, did you know there are other, lesser known symptoms, many are unaware of including: jaw, face, neck and shoulder pain, headaches, dizziness or vertigo, difficulty with swallowing and tinnitus. Obviously, if you are experiencing these symptoms for the first time, then ensure you seek help from a medical professional for an accurate diagnosis. if all medical testing has proved negative then muscle tension in the neck, shoulders and jaw may be playing a part in your pain.
