I thought it might be time for a little reintroduction and to ask a favour...

My name is Samantha, the owner and lead Audiologist at Hearing Matters (Maidstone) Ltd, and I’m passionate about helping people improve their hearing and, ultimately, their quality of life.

One of the things I love most about my job is getting to know the people who walk through my door. Hearing loss affects everyone differently. For some, it's struggling to follow conversations with loved ones. For others, it's missing out on social occasions, hobbies or the little everyday moments that bring joy.

My role is about much more than hearing tests and hearing aids. It's about listening, understanding and supporting people with kindness, patience and genuine care. I want every patient to feel comfortable, valued and confident that they're receiving the very best support for their hearing health.

When I'm not in clinic, you'll usually find me spending time with my children, enjoying a day at the beach, fundraising for charity, usually Community Driving School CIC, and wearing something yellow (my favourite colour 💛).

Thank you to everyone who has trusted me with their hearing care over the years. It’s a privilege to be part of your journey, and I look forward to helping many more people hear the moments that matter most.

There is a link in the comments to book in your next appointment with us 😊

I would be very grateful if you could share this post far and wide BBN - BB Networking, The Women In Business Network (WIBN) , Synergy Networking Events , Kent Kinnections. All of these networking groups have been wonderful for connecting with new people and building long term friendships and relationships.

😳 “I thought this was going to end in divorce…”

In Part III of our "You Found WHAT in Their Ear?!" mini-series, we’re sharing the appointment that caused a very awkward and slightly tense conversation at home before the patient even made it into clinic… 😂

A patient arrived after his wife spotted something in his ear that looked suspiciously like a false nail.

Understandably, she had questions.
Quite a few questions.

After a careful investigation under the microscope, we discovered the culprit:
💅 A sticker… looking suspiciously like a false nail.

To this day, I’m still not entirely sure how it got there.

As funny as these moments can seem afterwards, it’s also a reminder that ears are incredibly delicate, and foreign objects can quickly become uncomfortable or potentially damaging.

The good news?
We were able to safely remove it in clinic.

👂 Another case file from Hearing Matters (Maidstone) Ltd…

You Found WHAT in Their Ear?! continues.

Disclaimer: Photo is not of my nails. Mine are kept clinically short and tidy. 😂

Did you know that at Hearing Matters Ltd, we offer informal hearing care coffee mornings for care homes? ☕👂

We visit care homes to host relaxed, friendly discussions with residents, their families and friends about hearing health and hearing care.

These sessions can include:
• Demonstrating how hearing tests work
• Showing the equipment we use to look inside the ears
• Talking through common hearing aid problems
• Answering questions about hearing loss, ear wax and hearing care
• Offering practical advice in an informal, pressure-free environment

They’re designed to be approachable, informative and supportive — helping residents feel more confident about their hearing and giving families and care teams the opportunity to ask questions too.

If you know a care home that may benefit from something like this, we’d be delighted to have a conversation with them about what would be most useful for their residents and staff.

Part II of "You Found WHAT in Their Ear?!"

Some things we find aren’t just unusual — they’re risky.

We once removed:
💎 The back of an earring… sitting very close to the eardrum.
It doesn’t take much for something like that to cause real damage.

This is where experience matters. We will only ever remove something if it is safe to do so, and knowing when to proceed — and when not to — is incredibly important.

This week is Deaf Awareness Week.

Hearing loss is far more common than many people realise and often goes unnoticed.

In the UK, millions are affected, facing everyday challenges at work, in social settings, and in public spaces.

It’s not just about volume.
It’s about clarity, context, and connection.

Often, it looks like:
• Nodding along but missing key details
• Avoiding busy environments where hearing becomes exhausting
• Feeling left out in meetings or conversations

These are invisible obstacles.
That’s why awareness matters.

Because small changes make a real difference:
🔹 Face someone when you speak
🔹 Speak clearly, not louder
🔹 Reduce background noise
🔹 Be patient

Looking after our hearing and understanding hearing loss, should be no different to looking after our sight.

Awareness leads to understanding.
Understanding leads to inclusion.

You wouldn’t believe what we find… 👂

We see a lot of ears at Hearing Matters… and every now and then, something unexpected turns up.

Let’s just say… it’s not always wax.

Over the next few posts, we’re sharing some of the strangest things we’ve carefully removed from patients’ ears.

All real. All handled calmly. All a reminder of just how important it is to have someone you trust when something doesn’t feel quite right.

Let’s start with one of the more… memorable ones.

🕷️ A spider!

(Not alive by the time we’d finished.)

Carefully and cautiously removed — but not something you forget in a hurry.

Any ideas what else we've found in patients' ears?

A lot of people take care of their sight with regular trips to the optician.

But far fewer treat their hearing the same way — and that’s a real shame.

Hearing loss can have a significant impact on someone’s day-to-day life.

And early diagnosis and care can help avoid further, unnecessary complications.

We recommend a hearing test at least once a year.

Sometimes more frequently, depending on the type of hearing loss.

Why?

Because changes often happen gradually — and people don’t notice them.

But we do at Hearing Matters Ltd.

Thank you John Kelly, for lending me your ears. It was a pleasure to have you in clinic today.
