Sometimes it’s not one big thing.

It’s the constant pressure.
The responsibility.
The feeling that you’re holding everything together… but quietly struggling underneath.

At Chapter House Counselling and Psychology, Darrel works with adults who feel stretched, stuck, or overwhelmed by the demands of life—whether that’s work, relationships, or simply trying to keep going when things don’t feel right.

His approach is calm, grounded, and practical.
Not about “fixing” you—
but helping you make sense of what’s going on and find a way forward that actually feels manageable.

Because sometimes, you don’t need more pressure.
You need space to think clearly again.

If this resonates, you’re not alone—and support is here.

Most couples wait far too long before asking for help.
By Nicola Platts

In counselling, as in so much of human relationships, we often know something is wrong long before we understand why.

Many couples sense that something has shifted — conversations feel tense, small disagreements turn into bigger ones, or silence replaces connection. But instead of addressing it, people often hope it will resolve itself.

Unfortunately, very few relationship problems improve through being ignored.

All couples disagree from time to time. Conflict itself is not the problem — it’s how we communicate during those moments that matters. The language we use can quickly turn frustration into blame.

You might find yourself saying things like:
“You always take your mother’s side.”
“You never listen to me.”

Or the opposite may happen. Instead of arguing, one partner withdraws completely — the silent treatment. It can feel easier to say nothing than to risk another disagreement.

Over time these patterns can create distance.
Trust begins to erode.
You may start to question what happened to the closeness you once had — not just sexually, but the everyday intimacy of touching, kissing, holding hands and feeling emotionally connected.

Many couples only seek help when the distance between them feels impossible to ignore.

Relationship counselling offers a space where those stuck conversations can finally be heard and understood. With the right support, couples can learn how to:

• communicate more openly
• understand each other’s needs and triggers
• break unhelpful patterns of conflict
• rebuild trust and emotional connection

Most importantly, couples can develop the tools they were never taught — the skills that help relationships grow rather than slowly drift apart.

Sometimes asking for help is not a sign that a relationship is failing.
It is a sign that the relationship matters enough to work on.

Couples Counselling or Discernment Counselling – what’s the difference?

Not every couple comes to therapy knowing what they want.

Some couples arrive saying:
• “We want to fix this.”
• “We’re stuck in the same arguments.”
• “We’ve drifted and don’t know how to find each other again.”

That’s where couples counselling works best – helping you understand your patterns, repair trust, improve communication, and rebuild connection.

But some couples arrive saying:
• “I don’t know if I can stay.”
• “Part of me wants to try, part of me wants out.”
• “We’re talking in circles and going nowhere.”

That’s where discernment counselling can be a better starting point.

Discernment counselling isn’t about convincing anyone to stay or leave.
It’s about slowing everything down, reducing the emotional chaos, and helping each person get clear on:
• What’s actually happened
• What part they have played
• Whether the relationship has a viable path forward
• And what kind of work would be required if they chose to try

There’s no pressure.
No blame.
No rushing decisions that affect your whole life.

Sometimes the most therapeutic thing isn’t fixing the relationship yet –
it’s creating clarity, safety, and space to think.

If you’re unsure what you need, that’s okay.
That uncertainty is often the reason people reach out in the first place.

💛 If this resonates, you’re not broken – you’re human.

Catastrophizing as a Psychological Defense Mechanism

Catastrophizing isn’t just “overthinking.”
It’s often the mind’s way of trying to protect you—by preparing for the worst so you don’t feel blindsided.

It can give a brief sense of control, but long-term it fuels anxiety, hypervigilance, and emotional exhaustion.

How to shift it:
• Notice when your mind jumps to the worst-case scenario
• Ask yourself, “What else could be true?”
• Use grounding or breathwork to steady your nervous system before responding

Reflection:
When you catastrophize, what fear or vulnerability is your mind trying to protect you from?

If this resonates with you—or you know someone who struggles with anxiety—you can contact us for a free initial consultation.

Most people move through life carrying two versions of themselves.

One version is the one the world sees —
the capable one, the busy one, the one who jokes, works, parents, tries, survives.
The version that looks “fine.”

But the other version is the one no one sees…
and that’s the one that tells the real story.

In that hidden version live all the quiet battles:
the overthinking,
the people-pleasing,
the scanning for danger,
the apologising for things that weren’t your fault,
the shutting down when emotions feel too big,
the comparing yourself to everyone else,
the feeling “not enough” even when you’re doing everything you can.

For many, this isn’t personality —
it’s Complex PTSD.
It’s what happens when the nervous system has spent years trying to stay safe.

And here’s the important part:
these patterns aren’t who you are.
They’re who you had to become.

The good news is that the nervous system can heal.

At Chapter House, we have specialists trained in trauma-focused approaches like EMDR — a therapy that helps the brain finally process what it’s been holding onto, so the triggers lose their power and the body can breathe again.

Gemma Cresswell-Nash, our CBT & EMDR therapist, works gently and effectively with adults who are ready to understand their patterns, soften their reactions, and rebuild a sense of calm and confidence.

P.S.
That hidden version of you — the tired one, the overwhelmed one, the one carrying too much — deserves support too.

If any of this feels familiar, we’re here when you’re ready.
