🕊️ Dolly Parton | 1946–2026

Today, the world has lost one of its most recognisable voices and one of music’s greatest storytellers.

Dolly Parton had an extraordinary ability to put love, heartache, hope and goodbye into words — which is perhaps why so many of her songs feel especially poignant when we think about funerals and saying farewell to someone we love.

“I Will Always Love You” has to be one of the most beautiful examples. Although not originally written as a funeral song, its simple message of parting with love rather than bitterness makes the words incredibly powerful at a final farewell.

Then there are songs such as “Coat of Many Colors”, with its beautiful message about family and the things that truly matter, “The Seeker”, reflecting on faith and searching for meaning, and “Light of a Clear Blue Morning”, offering that little sense of hope after darker days.

Music is such an important part of a funeral. Sometimes a song can express in three or four minutes what we struggle to put into words ourselves.

Dolly leaves behind a remarkable catalogue of music that will continue to bring back memories, raise smiles and, undoubtedly, provide comfort at many farewells for generations to come.

Rest in peace, Dolly. 🤍

Recent news from Hull has understandably caused concern and prompted many people to question the standards they should expect from a funeral director. Like so many others, we are deeply saddened by what those families have experienced.

At The Elms Funeral Directors, we are proud members of the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) and adhere to the UK Funeral Director Code.

The Code sets clear standards covering every stage of funeral care, from the first contact with a family through to aftercare. It requires members to treat every deceased person with dignity and respect, maintain secure and purpose-built care facilities, keep comprehensive records, provide transparent information to families, and have a written complaints procedure in place.

NAFD member funeral homes are also subject to a robust inspection programme, including on-site inspections, evidence-based compliance checks and mystery shopping. Should concerns ever arise, families have access to NAFD Resolve, an independent dispute resolution service operated in partnership with the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR), providing an impartial route for complaints.

At The Elms, these aren’t just standards we comply with—they reflect the values we have always believed in. Every person entrusted to our care is treated with compassion, dignity and the utmost respect, and every family can be confident that their loved one is cared for to the highest professional standards.
