I’ve recently received my diagnosis of AuDHD — a combination of Autism and ADHD. It’s been a deeply personal and reflective journey, bringing with it a mixture of emotions, understanding and, in many ways, relief. Having a diagnosis has helped me make sense of parts of myself that I’ve sometimes struggled to understand, while also giving me a new perspective on the ways my brain experiences the world. I’m sharing this because I know how powerful it can be to see yourself reflected in someone else’s story. For me, this isn’t about being defined by a diagnosis, but about gaining greater self-understanding, self-compassion and acceptance. I’m looking forward to embracing all of the strengths, challenges and uniqueness that come with being me. 💜

When the urge to self-harm feels overwhelming, try to create some space between the feeling and the action. Distraction won’t make difficult emotions disappear, but it can help you ride out the intensity while giving your nervous system time to settle. Try listening to music, moving your body, getting creative, grounding yourself through your senses, reading, playing a game, or reaching out to someone you trust. Most importantly, be gentle with yourself—an urge is a feeling, not an instruction, and it will pass. 💜 If you feel unable to keep yourself safe, please seek immediate support from someone you trust or an appropriate crisis service.

Hero figures are a resourcing technique used within EMDR to help clients access feelings of safety, strength, protection and support. The client identifies a real, fictional, historical or imagined person or character whom they view as courageous, compassionate, wise or protective. Through bilateral stimulation, the client can strengthen the positive qualities and emotions associated with this figure, creating an internal resource that can be drawn upon when they feel overwhelmed, vulnerable or distressed. Hero figures can be particularly helpful for clients who find it difficult to access a sense of safety or who have limited experiences of reliable support.

Remember, growth isn’t about becoming someone new; it’s about learning to accept, nurture and appreciate who you are, exactly where you are, while gently allowing yourself to grow. 💜

Sometimes we can become so focused on what has happened, what might happen next, or what we feel we should be doing, that we lose touch with the moment we are actually living.

Therapy can offer an opportunity to gently slow down, notice what is happening within us, and reconnect with the present moment. Life isn’t always easy, and being present doesn’t mean ignoring the difficult feelings. It means allowing ourselves to experience life as it unfolds — the joy, the uncertainty, the ordinary moments and everything in between.

There is no rewind button. So perhaps today, gently ask yourself: What would it mean to be fully present for this moment? 💜🌿
