When children and young people with ADHD are struggling to self-regulate, it can look like they are choosing to be “difficult” but often, their nervous system is simply overwhelmed.

These behaviours aren’t necessarily a sign that a child won’t regulate. Often, they are signs that they can’t regulate independently in that moment.

For people with ADHD, that window of feeling regulated and in the zone can sometimes be much narrower and you can move out of it very quickly.

In this part, we explore what that can look like and why it happens.

Save this for later & share with someone who might relate.

“Born with the wrong owner’s manual.” — W. Dobson, MD 🧠

Dr Zdrali explores this powerful quote from W. Dobson, MD, and why it resonates with so many people living with ADHD.

The challenge isn’t that someone with ADHD is “doing it wrong”, it’s that we often expect them to follow rules and systems that weren’t designed for the way their brain works.

From diagnosis to education, shifting our perspective can change everything. Instead of asking “Why won’t they follow the rules?” we should be asking “Are we using the right manual?”

People with ADHD have their own way of processing the world. Understanding that means adapting our approach, not increasing expectations that were never designed with them in mind.

💙 When we stop trying to force the wrong strategies, we create space for people with ADHD to thrive.

Quote attributed to W. Dobson, MD.

Every behaviour tells a story.

Children aren’t “difficult”, they’re navigating the world with the nervous system they have.
Some days they feel calm, connected, and ready to learn. Other days they may feel overwhelmed, anxious, or dysregulated.

When we shift from asking “What’s wrong with this child?” to “What might this child be experiencing?” we create space for compassion, connection, and growth.

At BodyMind Centre, we believe understanding comes first. 💚

✨ Is your daughter thriving at school but struggling at home?

Many girls with ADHD and autism become experts at masking throughout the school day. They work incredibly hard to meet expectations, fit in and manage their emotions.

By the time they get home, all of that energy can feel overwhelming. Emotional outbursts, meltdowns, withdrawalor exhaustion may not be “bad behaviour”, they may be a sign that your child is finally in a space where they feel safe enough to let those feelings out.

If this sounds familiar, you are not alone.

Understanding masking and recognising the signs can make a huge difference in supporting your child’s wellbeing.

If you’re noticing these behaviours in your child, our team at The Bodymind Centre is here to help. Get in touch to explore how we may be able to support your child and your family. 💙
