What causes back pain?
Back pain is incredibly common, but the cause isn’t always obvious. Your back is made up of lots of different structures and pain can come from a few different areas.
Here are some of the most common causes:
🔹 Joints
The small joints in your spine help you move. If they become stiff, irritated or inflamed, they can cause sharp pain and stiffness in your back.
🔹 Muscles
Long hours sitting, poor posture, lifting or repetitive movements can cause your back muscles to become tired and overworked, leading to aches and discomfort.
🔹 Discs
The discs between your spine act like cushions. Sometimes they can bulge or become irritated, which can cause back pain and in some cases, pain that travels down your legs.
🔹 Wear and Tear
As we get older, changes in our spine are normal. Sometimes these changes can cause stiffness, inflammation and discomfort.
🔹 Injuries
Sudden movements, sports injuries, falls or accidents can strain the tissues that support your back and cause pain.
The important thing to remember is that back pain is not always something you just have to put up with. Understanding what is causing your pain is the first step towards managing it.
