You're just trying to cope.
Doom scrolling, binge watching, mindless distractions, all are part of your coping pattern.
I need you to NOTICE if you are being too hard on yourself while trying to cope with overwhelming emotions.
Coping Mechanisms are tools that we consciously or subconsciously use to deal with unpleasant situations or emotions. They could be "good" or "bad", but what helps is when you see them as just value neutral. They exist. They have a defined purpose - to help you cope.
It is a message that your stresses are overwhelming your resources. So, pay attention, without the judgement (the judgement hasn't taken you very far, right?)
Next time you see maladaptive coping behaviors, get curious, see what is triggering it. Just pause - maybe you can open your notes app and write down a list of things stressing you out.
Then, you can actually do something about it. Do not take away your crutches without giving additional support, or you will fall.
Here is what additional support during stressful times can look like:
1. Words of self-kindness & encouragement - "I love you", "You are safe with me", "It is going to be okay."
2. Check the basics - Have you eaten nutritious food in the last 2-3 hours? Do you need water? Have you slept well? Do what you can to fix that, or make a mental note to act on it as soon as you can.
3. Self soothing under 5 minutes - 4-7-8 breathing, breathe in, hold, and take a longer exhale (repeat for 5 rounds), put your hands on your heart and belly and gently tap while breathing, or hug yourself/rub your arms to anchor yourself to your body.
Next time, you are stressed, before judging yourself and stressing yourself more over your coping techniques, get curious and find out why it is happening.
What is your go-to method to de-stress during the day?🤗🤗
