Sepsis is a serious and life-threatening reaction to an infection. It can develop quickly and needs urgent treatment, so knowing the signs could save a life.

In adults, remember the word SEPSIS:
β†’ Slurred speech or confusion
β†’ Extreme shivering or muscle pain
β†’ Passing no urine in a day
β†’ Severe breathlessness
β†’ It feels like you're going to die
β†’ Skin mottled or discoloured

In children, look out for:
β†’ Breathing very fast
β†’ A 'fit' or convulsion
β†’ Looking mottled, bluish, or pale
β†’ A rash that doesn't fade when you press it
β†’ Being very lethargic or difficult to wake
β†’ Feeling abnormally cold to touch

🚨 What to do if you suspect sepsis:
Call 999 or go to A&E if someone has any of the sepsis symptoms above
Call 111 or contact the surgery if you're worried about an infection getting worse

Sepsis can affect anyone, but babies, young children, older adults, people with weakened immune systems and those with long-term health conditions are more at risk.

Heatstroke: know the signs β˜€οΈ

Heat exhaustion can turn into heatstroke fast, and heatstroke is a 999 emergency.

Signs of heat exhaustion: tiredness, dizziness, headache, feeling sick, heavy sweating, muscle cramps, being very thirsty.

What to do: move them somewhere cool, get them to lie down with feet slightly raised, give them water to drink, and cool their skin with a damp sponge or cold packs under the armpits and neck. They should feel better within 30 minutes.

Call 999 if they:
Don't improve after 30 minutes
Feel hot and dry, or have stopped sweating
Have a very high temperature
Are confused, have a seizure, or lose consciousness

To prevent it: drink plenty of fluids, wear loose light clothing, avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm, take cool showers, and check in on older neighbours, young children, and anyone with a health condition.

This week is World Breastfeeding Week, a global celebration of the incredible benefits of breastfeeding, and a reminder of the support that families need to make it work.

The World Health Organization describes breastfeeding as "one of the most effective ways to safeguard child and maternal health". It provides babies with the perfect balance of nutrients, boosts their immune system, and supports healthy development.

For mums, breastfeeding can help with recovery after birth, reduce the risk of certain cancers, and support bonding with baby.

But breastfeeding isn't always easy. It can be painful, exhausting, and emotional. Many mums face challenges like latching issues, low supply, or simply feeling overwhelmed. And that's completely normal.

However you choose to feed your baby - breast, bottle, combi, or expressed - a fed baby is a happy baby, and a supported mum is what matters most.

If you're struggling or have questions, support is available:

Speak to your health visitor or GP
Call the National Breastfeeding Helpline on 0300 100 0212
Visit nhs.uk/start4life for advice, videos, and guidance
Local breastfeeding groups and peer supporters can also make a huge difference

To every mum feeding her baby this week: you're doing an amazing job.

A stroke is a medical emergency. Every minute counts, and recognising the signs quickly can save a life, or reduce long-term damage.

The most well-known way to spot a stroke is F.A.S.T:

Face - has it dropped on one side? Can they smile?
Arms - can they lift both arms and keep them there?
Speech - is it slurred or muddled?
Time - if you see any of these signs, call 999 immediately.

But there are other signs to be aware of too:

1️⃣ Numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body
2️⃣ Confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech
3️⃣ Trouble seeing in one or both eyes
4️⃣ Trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or lack of coordination
5️⃣ A sudden, severe headache with no known cause

If you spot any of these signs in yourself or someone else, call 999 straight away. Don't wait to see if it passes, and don't drive to hospital. Paramedics can start treatment on the way.

The faster a stroke is treated, the better the chance of recovery. Please share this post, you never know whose life it might help save. πŸ’™

πŸ’¬ Thinking about your contraception options?

Did you know we offer contraceptive implant (rod) fittings as well as coil fittings right here at the surgery?

Both are highly effective, long-lasting forms of contraception, and they could be a great option if you're looking for something low-maintenance that doesn't require remembering a daily pill.

Both services at the practice are provided by Dr Bastain.

If you'd like to chat through your options, ask any questions, or book in for a fitting, please give us a call to arrange an appointment.

Hot weather can affect how some medications work, how they're stored, and how our bodies react to them.

A few things to keep in mind:

🌑️ Store your medicines properly
Most medicines should be kept below 25Β°C, out of direct sunlight. Avoid leaving them in cars, on windowsills, or in bathrooms. Some, like insulin and certain eye drops, need to be kept in the fridge.

πŸ’§ Stay hydrated, especially if you take:
Blood pressure tablets or diuretics (water tablets) which can increase the risk of dehydration
ACE inhibitors (like ramipril) which affect how your kidneys manage fluids
Metformin and other diabetes medicines where dehydration can affect blood sugar levels

🧴 Watch out for sun sensitivity
Some medicines can make your skin much more sensitive to sunlight, meaning you burn more easily. These include: Certain antibiotics (like doxycycline), some antidepressants, diuretics, acne treatments (like isotretinoin), and some anti-inflammatories. If you're on any of these, use a high SPF, cover up, and stay in the shade when you can.

🧠 Be aware of heat and mental health medicines
Some antidepressants, antipsychotics, and ADHD medications can affect how your body regulates temperature, making you more prone to overheating.

❓ Not sure if the heat could affect your medication?
Please don't stop taking anything without speaking to us first. Give the surgery a call, or pop into your local pharmacy for a quick chat, they'll be happy to help.
