πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ Achilles Pain Slowing You Down?

If you're training for the Wigan 10K, don't ignore pain at the back of your ankle. Achilles tendon pain often starts as a small ni**le but can become a much bigger problem if left untreated.

Common signs include:

πŸ‘£ Pain or stiffness first thing in the morning
πŸ‘£ Tenderness when you press the tendon
πŸ‘£ Pain during or after a run
πŸ‘£ Stiffness after sitting for a while

What causes it?

βœ”οΈ Increasing your mileage too quickly
βœ”οΈ Suddenly adding hill or speed sessions
βœ”οΈ Tight calf muscles
βœ”οΈ Not allowing enough recovery between runs

Top tip: Strengthening your calves is one of the best ways to improve the health of your Achilles tendon. Simple heel raises, performed consistently, can make a big differenceβ€”but they should be tailored to your symptoms and stage of recovery.

🚨 Don't try to "run through it." Early assessment and the right rehabilitation can often prevent a minor irritation becoming a long-term injury.

Our aim is to keep you training safely so you're ready to enjoy race day on 6th September.

Have you ever struggled with Achilles pain? Let us know in the comments below! πŸ‘‡

πŸƒ SHIN SPLINTS – DON'T RUN THROUGH THE PAIN!

As the countdown to the Wigan 10K continues, many runners start to notice an aching pain along the inside of their shin. It might seem like something you can "just run off"... but this is often the first sign of shin splints.

What are shin splints?

Shin splints (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome) occur when the muscles and tissues attached to the shin bone become overloaded, causing inflammation and pain. They commonly affect new runners or those who have recently increased their training.

Signs to look out for:
πŸ”Ή An aching or sharp pain along the inside of the shin.
πŸ”Ή Pain during or after a run.
πŸ”Ή Tenderness when you press on the shin.
πŸ”Ή Symptoms that improve with rest but return when you start running again.

Why do they happen?
It's rarely just one thing. Common causes include:

πŸ‘Ÿ Increasing mileage or speed too quickly.
πŸ‘Ÿ Tight calf muscles or reduced ankle mobility.
πŸ‘Ÿ Weak hips, glutes or foot muscles.
πŸ‘Ÿ Poor running mechanics.
πŸ‘Ÿ Worn or unsuitable running shoes.

Can I just keep running?

Ignoring shin splints can allow the problem to worsen. In some cases, continued overload can progress to a stress reaction or stress fracture, resulting in a much longer recovery.

How can physiotherapy help?

At The Bridgeman Physiotherapy Centre, we don't just treat where it hurtsβ€”we identify why it hurts.

A physiotherapy assessment can help:

βœ… Reduce your pain.
βœ… Improve strength and flexibility.
βœ… Correct movement and running mechanics.
βœ… Develop a graded return-to-running programme.
βœ… Keep you on track for race day.

πŸ… The earlier you seek advice, the quicker you're likely to recover.

If shin pain is affecting your training, don't wait until you're forced to stop running.

Good luck to everyone training for the Wigan 10Kβ€”we'll help keep you moving all the way to the finish line!
