When I am not in clinic, or at the Women’s gym, I am mummy to Ezekiel and Aurora Blue.
I struggle just like every other mum with exhaustion, sleep deprivation, constant hunger, overstimulation which in turn is making me struggle with my appetite and managing my weight.
My cortisol is constantly elevated, my body is trying to survive by sending me hunger signals so that it can get energy from food if it can’t get it from sleep. It has a knock on effect on my mood, my food choices, my skin and hair, my cognitive function… basically everything!
Us experts struggle at times too. We are not perfect. We experience the same struggles we help you overcome every single day.
Surely then if you know what you need to do you should just do it right? Yes, and no.
Your body is sending signals- be it hunger, or anything else because it’s trying to tell you something.
Listening to your body with compassion, allowing it to speak and hearing it out is not greediness, laziness or looking for excuses. I don’t eat unhealthily. I just eat a lot because I am very tired.
Could I make better choices at times? Sure. Opting for the banana instead of two biscuits for example. As I say we are not perfect. We a re human too with weaknesses and cravings.
But when the choice is between me getting 30 minutes of quality time with my children but eating a cheese sandwich for lunch, or taking the time to prepare a salad which reduces my time with them by half, is it really the better choice?
First and foremost I’m a mum. And if that means I’m a stone heavier than I’d like to be for the next couple of years until I regain some of my personal space and freedom, so be it. I wanted to be a mum more than anything. It’s a blessing to have two beautiful, healthy children! Sure I don’t feel comfortable in my body right now. But learning to show compassion towards myself and focus on what really matters is something so important I had to learn and believe in before I can teach my children to do the same 🙏🏽
Let’s also remember that I have already lost 20 kgs of the baby weight just by making better food choices whenever I can. It’s a slow road but I’m moving towards my goals be it at a snails pace 😄
To all the fellow mums struggling like me- we are in it together! When we are giving you advice as coaches, we aren’t preaching at you from the text book we learned from. We speak from the heart, from our own experiences, our tearful moments and our own insecurities and struggles.
We are all perfectly imperfect as humans and as women. You will get there. I will get there. Maybe not as fast as we would like to. But be patient and be kind to your body. This body gave birth to, and is the lifeline to your kids. Be there for them for now. Worry a little more about how you look when they get a little older. Keep moving forward, and celebrate the small wins.
Prioritise quality time with your children. They will never be this little again. They need love, affection and attention more now, than they ever will. Their little brains are growing and are shaped by the love and care they receive from you right now. You can be a size 10 in a year or two.
Keep going! You are doing amazing! 💪🏼🫶🏼
