The Fertility Formula

As the name suggests, TCM was developed in China thousands of years ago and has evolved to be the medical practice that is used today. The Chinese theory of health diagnosis is very different to a Western approach and is founded on the principles of balancing Yin and Yang, and establishing a smooth flow of Qi and blood around the body and organs. Illness occurs when there is an imbalance of Yin an

d Yang and a stagnation of Qi and/ blood. Many factors can contribute to this imbalance, including stress and emotions. TCM combines the emotional and physical elements of an illness and seeks to treat both. I have found over many years of practice in my clinic, that almost every patient I see has some degree of emotional factor involved in their health. TCM is excellent at helping to resolve these emotional symptoms. There is a beautiful poetry behind the theory of TCM but I love it most because it looks at all aspects of the patient’s health, physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual. Somehow trying for a baby has turned into another thing you have to get right, hasn’t it?

The perfect diet. The perfect timing. The perfect calm mindset. Tracking everything, optimising everything and lying awake replaying the month, looking for the mistake you must have made.

This is very typical of the ambitious, high achieving, professional, Type A women I often see in my clinic. It’s almost impossible to change this way of behaving, because you’ve found it to be so successful with things you’ve put your mind to in the past.

But I’ll be honest, because I’ve sat where you’re sitting. That level of vigilance is exhausting. After a while it stops feeling like ‘caring’ and starts feeling a lot like pressure.

So here’s your Monday re-frame. Letting go of perfection isn’t giving up. It’s loosening your grip on the things you were never in control of in the first place. You can look after yourself beautifully AND accept that you are not the reason this hasn’t happened yet. Both are true at once.

Swipe for five gentle things I give you permission for (my favourite is the third one)

And if you’d like something emotionally steadying to hold onto in the meantime, my free Two Week Wait companion is linked in my bio for you 🤍

Sleep is your superpower for hormonal health. It has a far greater impact on fertility and menopause issues than anything else I can think of. But so many of us just put up with broken, interrupted sleep every night.

I’ve tried so many different supplements, routines, magic potions to try and sleep straight through the night. So far the only thing that has made a significant difference (and I know this because my watch has been tracking it every night!) are the beautiful botanical patches from .co

They smell gorgeous and just stick onto my arm at night. So I don’t need to worry about taking another pill. If you’re struggling to switch your mind off at night, or would just like to get a solid couple of hours straight through without waking, I’d definitely recommend you give them a go.

I’ve put a little link to their website in my bio so you can’t find them easily. I only recommend products that I use personally 🤍

What’s happened? Gone on holiday and your period has arrived unexpectedly? That wasn’t the plan and it’s thrown your plans of creating a holiday baby in the bin.

This is such a common complaint that I hear in my acupuncture clinic at this time of year. Almost every woman who travels to a beautiful holiday destination this summer will have disruption to her menstrual cycle. So what’s going on?

When you travel, cortisol rises. That rise can delay your LH surge, the hormone that triggers ovulation. Add a time zone change, melatonin disruption, and heat affecting your temperature readings, and your cycle can look completely different to usual.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), we say travel scatters Qi and places extra demands on your Kidney system, which is the foundation of reproductive health. Your body needs warmth, rest, and routine to come back to itself.

One disrupted cycle after a trip is completely expected. Keep tracking, don’t worry too much if your charts look strange, prioritise warm food and consistent sleep, and give your cycle 1–2 months to settle.

If you want to feel more confident reading your cycle, my Ovulation Workbook is a free download. Link in bio.

If you're trying to get pregnant, you've probably had a moment where you're staring at a long list of supplements wondering where to even start. What does your partner need? It can feel super overwhelming especially when every Instagram post suggests something different.

So to help, (after working for nearly 20 years with couples ttc), here are some of my thoughts...

The scientific evidence for most supplements is much less than the insta- wellness world makes it seem. And NONE come anywhere close to being as effective as sleep, hydration and a good diet. Not very sexy, but it's true. If you've not got those three things in place, do not waste your money on a supplement.

A body that's nourished and calm absorbs nutrients more effectively than one that's anxious and depleted, even on the same stack. There's no point paying £££ supplements if you're not capable of absorbing them. You are literally pee-ing money down the drain.

I know you will probably want lots more information on the supplements I recommend, so please take a look at my latest blog. pinklotusacupuncture.co.uk/fertility-supplements-tcm-vs-western/

And if you'd like to discuss your own fertility and how TCM acupuncture can help, please get in touch. All of my contact details are on my website

Here we go again, it’s 3am and you’re wide awake AGAIN.

Did you know that waking at 3am in perimenopause or menopause isn’t random insomnia. It’s a recognised pattern in TCM and once you understand why it’s happening, everything shifts towards a better night’s sleep.

From a Western perspective, declining oestrogen and progesterone affect your body’s ability to regulate temperature and stay in deep sleep. That early-morning window is when these hormonal changes really hit the hardest.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this has been described this for centuries. It’s aligned to a condition called Kidney Yin deficiency, which is your body’s cooling system running low. This is something I work with a lot in my clinic.

There are things you can do. Small, practical steps that many women find really make a difference. And if you want support alongside whatever care you’re already receiving, including HRT, acupuncture might be something to consider.

You don’t have to white-knuckle through this alone.

So whilst most of the country is getting excited about the World Cup football matches, I know that you are silently dreading watching your partner celebrate a goal at 11pm with a few beers, because today is also ovulation day.

The World Cup is going to cause havoc with lots of women’s fertility plans, so here are my thoughts on how you can approach this to gain a bit of calm, control back.

Ideally have a calm, gentle conversation with him about your worries. Or maybe send him this post for a subtle nudge in the right direction.

I have a free download, “From Good to Great Sperm” if you’d like a bit more information and reassurance.

I’m not going to apologise for using the words ‘period flow’ out in public.

There is nothing more natural than the monthly cycle of your body, yet we often cringe when it’s mentioned outloud. But, if you’re trying to conceive, I bet that you’ve googled ‘are my periods normal’.

It’s one of the most common things I hear from women I work with in my cheshire acupuncture clinic and also from women around the world who find me on youtube. The underlying worrying is always the same: Are my periods ok and what does it mean for my fertility?

From a Western perspective, heavier periods can often link to things like fibroids, adenomyosis or an oestrogen imbalance. Lighter periods can reflect lower oestrogen levels, the hormone that builds your uterine lining. These are all things which can be addressed both by western medicine and TCM

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), patterns like Blood Deficiency or Qi Deficiency give us an understanding what the body is asking for and how to support it.

The most useful thing you can do to understand your periods and cycle, is to stop googling endlessly and start monitoring what your body is telling you, for at least 3 months.

If you’d like me to explain a little more about this, please download my free guide, Read Your Body’s Fertile Signals, which is waiting for you in the link in bio.
