SO proud of my big brother for achieving sub-10 at the 2025 IRONMAN Frankfurt and qualifying for the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS! πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ†πŸ”₯ Truly inspirational πŸ’«

His discipline, grit, mental resilience, and nutrition carried him through training, race day, and recovery like a true athlete πŸ’ͺ🏼

Here’s the thing, performance doesn’t just come from training, it’s built on NUTRITION too πŸ₯—βœ¨

He worked closely with his coach to test and fine-tune his carb intake during both the bike and the run - this is an essential part of endurance nutrition. Too much can lead to gut issues, too little can leave you under-fueled. He managed to tolerate up to 120g of carbs per hour on the bike and 100g carbs per hour on the run - fuel that likely played a huge role in helping him break the sub-10 barrier! πŸš΄πŸ½β€β™‚οΈπŸƒπŸ½β€β™‚οΈβš‘οΈ

5 key principles every endurance athlete needs to fuel like a pro:
1️⃣ Eat high-quality food daily – think fruit, veg, lean protein, and complex carbs
2️⃣ Time your meals – fuel up before, refuel after (aim for carbs + protein within 60 mins!)
3️⃣ Balance your macros – carbs 45–65%, protein 15–20%, fat 20–35%
4️⃣ Eat enough – under-fueling = fatigue, cravings, and burnout
5️⃣ Hydrate – think fluids and electrolytes (aim for pale yellow urine as a guide)

Remember: food is fuel and the foundation of strong performance. Train hard, eat smart πŸ‘ŠπŸΌ

Love,

🍽️ LUNCHTIME INSPO 🍽️

πŸ€ΈπŸΌβ€β™€οΈ Good nutrition is all about balance - balance of carbs, protein, fats, vitamins & minerals AND enjoyment. That said, we shouldn’t expect each meal to be perfectly balanced as often this is not possible! However, focussing on getting balance across the daytime helps ensure you are getting all the nutrients you need to function optimally.

πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ Sometimes I get stuck in a rut with my lunches and often need some inspiration!

🍳 EGG ON TOAST GETS A GLOW-UP 🍳
🍞 Sourdough
πŸ₯‘ Avocado
πŸ… Tomatoes
πŸ₯š 2x eggs
πŸ§€ Cottage cheese
🌱 garnish of choice!

Are you getting bored of your lunches or wonder how you can increase the nutritional value of your of your meals?πŸ‘‡πŸΌ

πŸ–πŸΌ 5 TIPS TO MAKE LUNCH MORE NOURISHING:

1️⃣ switching from spread to avocado smash or hummus to increase veggie content & add healthy fats

2️⃣ squeeze in some extra chopped or grated veggies such as lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, olives, carrot sticks OR have an additional veggie soup alongside your meal

3️⃣ base meal around a wholegrain starchy carbohydrate to increase fibre content

4️⃣ adding low fat cheese to increase protein & calcium intake

5️⃣ adding seasoning for extra nutrients and most importantly flavour!

Bon appetit πŸ˜‹

Food sustainability is a food system which has minimal impact on the environment, maintains and protects biodiversity and ecosystems, provides safe, accessible and nutritionally adequate food which meets our current needs, all without compromising future generations resources and needs.

🌍 π”Όπ•Ÿπ•§π•šπ•£π• π•Ÿπ•žπ•–π•Ÿπ•₯𝕒𝕝 π•šπ•žπ•‘π•’π•”π•₯ 𝕠𝕗 π••π•šπ•–π•₯𝕀 🌍:
❌ Food production contributes to 15-30% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in UK.

❌ Meat and dairy products are the biggest contributors to GHG emissions.

❌ 10 million tonnes of food products are wasted each year - 71% of that occurs in the home and could be avoided!

❌ Over 85% of fisheries have now been exploited and/or overfished. As a result, the marine ecosystem has been damage.

❌ Leading cause of deforestation, biodiversity loss, and soil and water pollution.

🧐 Meat, fish, and dairy provide us with a range of key nutrients such as iron, omega-3, calcium, iodine, zinc, vitamins A, D & B12 (just to name a few!) which are essential to our health. However, there needs to be a balance between keeping both ourselves and our planet healthy.

Why I chose to study nutrition?
β€’
πŸ‘§πŸΌ Since childhood, I have always been curious about nutrition. In my spare time, I enjoyed reading books surrounding food, and learning about different nutrients and recipes. It was a passion that continuously grew.
β€’
πŸ‹ During primary and secondary school, nutrition was never part of the curriculum. So, I was never aware that there were careers within this area (other than being a chef, of course). However, I didn’t want to be a chef. Although I enjoyed cooking, it wasn’t the cooking aspect I was most interested in. I was interested in how food affected the body and the mind. It wasn’t until I reached my twenties, that the penny finally dropped…
β€’
πŸ“š I studied Nutrition at Leeds Beckett University in 2015. I was a mature student when I began, and I couldn’t be more grateful that I waited until I was slightly older to go to university. Being older meant I had more time to really plan my future, allowing me to tailor my university degree to achieve my desired career.
β€’
🧬 This course provided me with the foundations of nutritional science, opening up many opportunities, and enabling me to move forward on my career path. It has been an incredible journey so far, and I look forward to what is to come.
